    Regclean doesn't finish

Today's the day I guess. I have never had Regclean not finish on a bunch of machines of different types and problems. This friends machine goes through all scans until about 90% of the "Type Library" scan and just hangs. I left it for 10 minutes and it was still stuck. 3 finger to cancel.

I went to a previous registry date, re-booted and tried it and got the same result. I tried it in safe mode and with msconfig set to load almost nothing in standard mode.

She has a handheld scanner that was acting odd so she called and when I got here it took her machine about 4 to 5 minutes to boot to full Windows. The delay was once the Windows splash started. The HD sounded like it was grinding hamburger while loading drivers.

Once up and running she hadn't noticed I guess but the things slower than molasses.

At any rate I scandisked, defragged (both completed) and RegClean justs stops. Any ideas or has anyone ever seen RegClean not finish?

Oh, I also deleted and installed a clean RegClean.exe

We're talkin' MS Regclean here, right? Yes, Regclean can hang up in certain situations when it can't handle a key. The Typelib entries is often a place where it has problem (when it does).

I would suggest either using another registry cleaner (at least temporarily) to perhaps clean out the problematic key(s), and/or from the Command Prompt doing 1) a SCANREG /FIX or 2) a REGEDIT export (/E) of the registry followed by a REGEDIT import (/C) to reconstruct the registry.

EDIT: Had forgotten about the old problematic entry introduced by IE5 (thanks for posting that Rog). One comment on that though... While the suggested fix (in the link Rog gave) will work (setting the helpdir to any valid directory will), the correct directory is not the one listed. I believe it should be (C:\Windows\Help). But as I said, any valid directory will get you past the Regclean hang.

DrMDJ, yes it's MS RegClean and I installed RegCleaner a few minutes ago and it found 33 entries. I removed those and tried RegClean again and it still hung. I'll see about your other suggestions later. I got to head for the dreaded work.

Rog, it's 98 and she's running IE4 though not using it. I checked your link though and it's worth checking except that she doesn't have IE5.

    Thanks, guys.
