    System File Checker Problem

When I try to run the system file checker I get this error message, and it will not run.

System File Checker cannot check this following folder. (I have a file not folder)
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VBUN300.DLL
The reported error is 267: The directory name is invalid.
Make sure the folder specification is correct and the device is ready and accessible. Click retry to try this folder again or click cancel to stop checking files.

    Anyone have any Ideas?

That's a Visual Basic Library error. It's an old, very old error. It's VBRUN..dll.
Does this relate to a game?
You should be able to reinstall that error anywhere you could do a search, but here I'll give you mine, just put it in your Windows/System file after you download this and help me get back to Mars, no seriously!:

Prophet I have been playing some card games from e-games.
Are you saying to delete the vbrun300.dll and then reinstall it? Can't I get it off the 98 install CD or do I need to go on the net and down load it?

VBUN300.DLL is not a file name or a folder name. Go to where Prophet pointed and D/L the VBRUN300.dll to you windows/system folder and delete the vbrun300.dll folder. See if that doesn't clear up some. Good luck.

I downloaded vbrun300.dll, which was zipped.
I unzipped it to c:\windows\system and it replaced the vbrun300.dll file I had there.
I still get the same error message and the system file checker will not run.

    Any other ideas? I hope.

    Try browsing to \windows\system
Select System, right mouse in the right window, select new > folder
    Create a folder called VBUN300.DLL.

    Try SFC again.

I had a similar problem where SFC had seen a folder in \windows\system and then I deleted it.
(no idea why you would have had a folder like this in the first place, but this may correct the error)

In SFC look under Settings, the Search Criteria tab and see if anywhere there there is a mention of a VBRUN300.DLL folder. If so, remove it. As has been said, there shouldn't be a folder by that name, and SFC shouldn;t be checking for it.

i would rename the "VBUN300.DLL" to Vbun300.old and try to rerun System File checker.

you could also extract a new copy of SFC from the Win 98 CD.

I replyed to this post yesterday, but for some reason it didn't make it.

WhitPhil, Windows would not let me make a new folder because I had a file by that name.

DrMDJ, I looked in setting and there was no mention of vbrun300.dll.

gnh, that worked, I changed the extension to .old and System File Checker run.

Now, won't I need the file vbrun300.dll to run some programs? Then do I just change the file extension for what ever program wants to run?

    THANK!! everyone for the help.

You may indeed need VBRUN300, you'd be surprised how many programs are a round that still use it. You might as well use Prophet's link above to download a fresh copy. Just put it in the Windows\System directory.
