    64 Bit DVD

    Hi all

Just wondered if anyone has sent off for the 64 Bit version yet. Just had a look on www.windowsvista.com/1033/ordermedia and you need to go a way in before they tell you how much it's going to cost for packing and handling. I'm particularly interested in the UK price but the rest of the world prices will be interesting, especially the US because I can easily double it to find the UK price.

I bit the bullet and went ahead with the order, it was amazingly a fair price, £7.88 inc vat % shipping.

I assume that I will be able to use either version as long as only one is installed at a time.

I'd like to know the answer to that as well, and I can't find the info anywhere. I also imagine that to be the case, but it would be nice to find the definitive answer.

    Leaflet in box wording:

"Also, please note that in accordance with industry practices, the operating system license that you purchased grants you the rights to install one copy of Windows Vista on one PC. By ordering the additional set of media, you do not receive any additional license rights. This offer may only be available for a limited time."

I don't think you will be able to use either version. I have both 32 bit and 64 bit versions. Currently I am running Windows XP Professional 32 bit. When I put the Vista 32 bit version dvd in it will load right away. When I put the 64 bit Vista version in I get an error message. I have posted screenshots of how the 32 bit and 64 bit version look when the dvd is first inserted.

You cannot upgrade to the 64 bit version from anything -- you need to boot from the DVD and do a clean install.

    Licensing-wise, quoth the EULA:
    2. c. Alternative Versions. The software may include more than one version, such as 32-bit and 64-bit. You may use only one version at one time.

Well that explains the error message I get when I insert the 64 bit version of Vista and try to do an upgrade.

Yup, there is no way round that one either, as Vista x64 doesn't come with a 32-bit installer. Booting from the DVD is the only way.

My 64bit disk came today Doesn't say upgrade like my 32 bit disk does. I appreciate you cant actually do an upgrade, but I wonder if I will still need to show my entitlement as I only bought the upgrade version. Let you all know when I try it.

Just tried it and it's definitely my key that decides whether it's an upgrade or not, as I've gone this far I'll continue installing without a key and see if the cheat install method works. This is just for testing reasons and I'll revert this machine back to MCE after testing.
