Need a program that can copy and move better then windows explorer.
What I want to do is, merge the files in 2 directories into one what I want is a program that can overwrite files if they are the same name and the same size but not move the files that have the same name but are a different size. I know this can be done, there are probably lots of programs that can do it but I'm not finding one with this specific function so thats why I'm posting asking about it here.

You know you can't have two files with the same name in the same folder don't you?
How often or how many machines do you need to do this too?
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

I know this, I have 2 folders worth of mp3's. A lot of them are exact duplicates, others have the same name but the files are not exactly the same, I want to have a program move files from one to the other overwriting the files that are the same size to get rid of duplicates and then not move files that have the same name but are different sizes.
For some reason windows explorer doesn't have this built in, it's just overwrite all or do it one by one by one which is extremely taxing and annoying.

Music, I suggest going the long route and listen to each then decide.
Heard smaller one that sounded better than bigger ones.

btcomm--Totally wild guess here. Open both folders. Highlight all the files in one, then right click on the highlighted bunch and drag and drop them (as a bunch) into the other open folder. I suspect Windows will ask if you want to overwrite each file that has the same name in the second folder. Windows will tell you the date and size of both files with duplicated name. You will, of course, have to make the choice. I am assuming Windows will ask this sequentially about each file with duplicated name. And I suspect this will not automatically "then not move files that have the same name but are different sizes". That is something that you must tell Windows.
You might want to make copies of each folder before you try this in case I am giving you poor advice.

What are you talking about? How would I tell windows this? When it shows you that 2 files have the same name it tells you the size of both files and asks you if you want to overwrite. You can click yes to all which will then overwrite every file regardless of it's size, or you can manually look at the size of each file and click yes or not to each one which is really stupid, they bring up the prompt and compare sizes because they know that even though 2 files might have the same name the contents might be different they just didn't go the next logical step which would be to be able to tell windows not to move files if they are a different size.
I guess no one here has ever had a need to do this, well I will keep looking and if someone does see this thread and knows of a program that does what I need then please let me know. Thanks.

May I suggest backing everything up to data dvds before you begin.
Hate to have you lose a good sounding song for a bad one.
Been there and done that.

Sorry you did not like my earlier suggestion.
jdc2000's program may work.
There are others
Rsync which is written for Unix

But there are ways to use it on Windows

And a whole bunch of little programs that may be useful

Hi btcomm,
Here are two better-than-windows-explorer programs. I've used Power Desk for years - the current version is v6. There is probably a freeware version floating around but I don't think that would have the features you are looking for. I have Ac Browser plus (freeware) installed but I keep forgetting to use it, so I can't tell you if it will do what you want it to do, but it does seem full-featured as a Windows Explorer replacement (not IE - don't be confused by the "browser" name) , so you might want to check it out.
