Suggest that you also check your jumper settings, if applicable.

Sadler - Are the Cd-roms showing up in device manager(Right click my computer>>properties>>device manager)?

If they are... check to see if they have been assigned a drive letter...

Yes cd-rom shows up in device manager, assigned letter D:, it just will not spin up lights will flash etc, nothing to with loose cables, can only think it is driver related.

When you say you can access your CD-ROM on DOS do you mean you can change to the CD's drive letter (D:\) or can you access data on the drive (do a DIR at the command prompt)?

If you get a message at the command prompt that says "Not ready reading drive D
    Abort, Retry, Fail?
" when you type "DIR" odds are it's not a driver problem it's a drive problem. CD-ROMs do go bad.

If it doesn't work hit it with a hammer. If hitting it fixes it great! If it breaks, oh well it didn't work anyway.

Bit of a long shot here(but cheaper than a new CDRom!)
I had a problem with my cd in my old system and had some success clearing the problem by using a lens cleaner. This was an intermittant fault though. Ironically you need cd rom access to load the software !?
    Hope this is useful
