    NTDetect failed

On boot up getting NTDetect failed, and machine will keep on trying to boot.

    WXP Home, Dell Dimension 8250.

I can boot up machine using the program Fix NTLDR from Tiny Empire. So I know that the PC will boot and run.

On this PC for the life of me I cannot find the i386 folder! As I do have a copy of the NTDetect file from my PC.

The other problem I see having is that I do not have Windows CD for XP Home, but I have access to XP Pro. Can I repair Home using the Pro disc?

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks.
Good luck and please post back with results!

Yes, in this case you should be OK to use the Pro disc. Boot with the XP CD in the drive and go to the Recovery Console. Copy "ntdetect.com" and "ntldr" from the i386 folder on the CD to the root folder of the C:\ drive. Then at the command prompt, type "Fixboot", then type "Fixmbr", then "Bootcfg /rebuild" all without the quotes.

The password that it wants is the one that was initially entered when Windows was first installed. If a password wasn't set at that time just press the Enter key.

I'll try the regedit from the ElderGeeks website and see what happens.

    That worked...the regedit thing.

OK, if this doesn't work than I will just use the Dell restore CD and have them deal with reinstalling all the stuff....Have to much time invested in this POS!!
