Extracting / Converting .dat file (from VCD) to AVI

I have a VCD which has, among many folders, on folder called MPEGAV, and inside it is a large file (of over 600 MB) with the file extension of .dat. (It is a concert).

I wish to convert this .dat file (or the VCD) into AVI, so that I can edit (cut out some parts of) it.

What software do I use (preferably free). I am using WinXP Home on my Dell Notebook, with lots of disk space and an external Plextor drive, in addition to the DVD/CDR drive which came with the Dell.

I tried to use IsoBuster (Version 1.9, which is the latest) and followed the instructions you stated. But it does not give me the option to save the file in .mpg format. The only option given by IsoBuster is in .dat format. And IsoBuster saved the file on my hard-drive (in my specified folder) in .dat format.

Is there something wrong that I did ?

Copy the .dat5 from the vcd to your hdd.

Nero recode will pick up those dat files and use them.

Can not remember which part of recode I used and Nero is not on this computer. I think it is the 3rd choice in recode. Fact is, I pulled four dats in and made a nice MAster dvd for a client.

Simply change the file extension from .dat to .mpg after pulling it off with buster. You will get a compatibility warning,but no biggee. Then as Train says,Nero Vision Express will convert to Vob files compatable for DVD burning...
