Sony Releases the Vaio UX Micro PC
    News : UMPC, posted 17-MAY-2006 09:11

Sony Electronics has introduced the VAIO UX Micro PC, a product that places full-size computer performance in a pocket-sized package. Weighing just over a pound, the new PC has a Microsoft XP Professional operating system and an Intel Core Solo Ultra Low Voltage CPU as the platform to build upon.

The UX model also features a 4.5-inch wide SVGA screen that slides up to expose an integrated keyboard.

This allows users to access familiar applications easily in the same way they would on a full-sized computer.

The pocket-sized PC also comes equipped with a stylus and Sony’s VAIO touch launcher for quick access to functions frequently used such as Internet access, e-mail, various computer applications, games and music.

The new computer incorporates Sony’s SmartWi technology, that allows users to toggle between wireless WWAN, LAN and Bluetooth technology for access to the Internet and e-mail.

While wireless LAN is available for Wi-Fi connections at home, office or hotspots and Bluetooth technology for peripherals, the WWAN built-in access provide connectivity to GPRS and EDGE networks. In the USA the VAIO UX can connect to Cingular’s EDGE network.

The UX model also incorporates two built-in cameras, one in the front for VoIP and video conferencing and another located on the back for taking photos. A VGA adapter is included to connect the PC to a projector.

Security is enhanced through an integrated biometrics fingerprint sensor, while an incorporated G-Sensor shock protection has been added to protect the unit’s hard drive, reducing the risk of data loss should it be dropped.

A docking station with three 2.0 USB ports, Ethernet, VGA, iLink IEEE-1394 interface and an AV output comes with the unit, making it easy to connect to peripherals like a full-sized keyboard, display and speakers when back in the office or at home.

The VAIO UX Micro PC will be available in July for about US $1,800.

They gotta keep coming up with new toys for us, but this one is a tad to expensive at the present time. Maybe in a year or two(if they're still around)(remember the internet appliance)and the price comes down.
