Cannot open more than 1 browser window

I am running winxp, IE 6.0.2900.2180. Hughesnet Sat connection.

When click on a link and try to open it in a new window it still closes the first one. Some links will open in another window (I guess if they are set up that way), but most will not on thier own and I cannot right click to open in new window because it still does the same thing. Help me....I really need to multi task on the internet!!

dgibbs13, You could try going into Internet Options>Advanced tab and under Browsing uncheck "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts", click Apply/OK.

After you change something or try a new fix for the problem be sure to shut down computer for a minute or so then start back up. I had problem for the longest time not being able to open links in new window and tried so many fixes. Then one day computers were shut down for cleaning and when the one was started back up the problem was gone.

This is what I was told about that:

Sometimes just performing some action and rebooting will not clear up problems. The RAM is volitile memory and will only be cleared completely when the computer is turned off. Memory can hold stuff when a reboot is performed and if the stuff that is being held has a bearing on the problem the problem will continue when it reboots, but the memory will be cleared completely when the computer is shut down.

Ok did that. left it shutdown for about 1/2 an hour. No help, still just one window at a time.

You probably have a broken entry in file associations.
Running the following commands from start > run will restore it.
Run each line individually. After each run, you should see a message DllRegisterServer succeeded.

regsvr32 Urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll

(This *could* also restore your backbutton)

That is one of the fixes I had tried and didn't work. But I didn't shut down computer after doing those fixes, so remember to shut down computer after trying them.

Go FireFox! The new 1.5.0.1 is pretty awesome. I'm not saying you shouldn't fix this problem anyway, but you should still be able to browse in style while you wait.

To open a new link in a new window I hold the shift key down and click on the link. And you can do the same thing in the new windows you have open

Do you have any toolbars installed?
These could very well be the culprit to this problem.
Especially older versions of Yahoo toolbar.

A handy tool to see what toolbars or bho's you have installed is BHODemon
It lets you enable and disable toolbars and bho's.
Try disabling toolbars or bho's (if any). See if that cures it.

I have tried and tried many things, including all of the above......until it gets fixed, I'm using firefox!! So far I like it.
