Windows Defender error 0x80004003
I had a similar problem with updating Windows Defender...I followed the advice here and was able to successfuly update the definition files. Now, another problem has cropped up...I clicked on the scan button and I got the following error....0x80004003 - the dialog box says "Windows Defender encountered a problem. Invalid pointer." Does this mean I'm going to have to unistall and then reinstall Windows Defender or is there an easier fix?

Bill: Was the button you clicked the one that shows up on the "Home" page every 3 days (if you haven't done a scan in less than that time?) If so, it's broke and will be fixed sometime in the future.
To go ahead and do a scan, just click on the Scan button on the top row and Win Defender should then scan ok...

Hello Bill,
This is a well document and Microsoft acknowledged this feedback regarding this error 24th of February. They have fixed the bug in house but unfortuately we'll not see the fix for this bug until they issue an update for the UI (User Interface) MSASCui.exe.
Apparently the user interface required some code changes and they have not issued an update for this yet.

Thanks guys. HAN's idea worked...the main scan button worked just not the one that shows up every three days. Also, I appreciate Eric's comments....Microsoft has some work to do to get this program ready for prime time.

Yeah, your observation is certainly valid. I do think they are committed to making it a good program.
Based on things I see and comments I read, this beta version is mostly rewritten code. They used the knowledge gained from the first beta, which was mostly Giant's original AS program (the company MS bought that arguably made the best AS at the time.)
Here is MS's newsgroup area for Defender. You might find some of this interesting... http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...s/default.mspx
