barcode fonts.
Hello, I got this barcode font, but it requires an asterick (*) before and after the text string to be barcoded. The problem is that MS Word apparently makes everything bold if it is between two astericks.
I have Word 2002 and 2003, same problem. The barcode wont read the text because word automatically strips the first asterick off of the template. I am using bookmarks and 'mailmerge' to get the data onto the forms. the data source is our MRP system, so the data itself cannot be modified to include the *. It has to be on the template.
THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY ASSISTANCE!

Oh, and I have tried everything on the 3of9 font readme-
Special note to MS Word users: There is a default setting in Word
that changes text surrounded by *'s into bold text. This setting must
be disabled for these fonts to work, otherwise the * characters that
are necessary for the barcode to scan properly will be lost and the
thickness of the bars will be altered. I have a copy of Word '97. The
setting might be found in a different place in other versions but
this is how I disabled it. From the Tools menu open the AutoCorrect
dialog box. On the AutoFormat tab uncheck the box for "*Bold* and
_underline_"
And have searched MS database, no luck so far.

Maybe fool Word by creating a .jpg/.gif image of an asterisk, then insert that image on either side of your barcode?

Type **yourword* then go back and delete one of the first * - no bold

Actually go to Format > Autoformat > Options > Autoformat As You Type
Uncheck *Bold* and _italic_ with real formatting
Also on the Autoformat tab uncheck the same thing.
Click Ok twice.

Hi Nix, Thanks,
On your first suggestion, the documents are created and batch printed with a mail merge. There are too many to manually edit the document.
Also, on my test machine I did uncheck both options and it doesn't make a difference.

I had originally thought your idea was stupid. The scan has to be the ASTERICK in barcode as an image, that might actually work. I will give it a try.

There are actually several auto format options that can cause the problem. You need to turn all of them off to correct the problem.
You might check the suggestions from the following link:
I've turned off automatic formatting options, and Word still formats my document.
First, make sure that you've turned off the options on the correct tab. When you click AutoCorrect Options on the Tools menu, you can turn off two types of automatic formatting:
The AutoFormat As You Type tab contains the automatic changes Microsoft Word makes as you type.
The AutoFormat tab contains the automatic changes Word makes when you format the document in a separate pass.
If neither of the above addresses your problem, try one of the following:
Unwanted symbols keep reappearing
If you've cleared the Hyphens ( -- ) with dash ( — ) check box on the AutoFormat As You Type tab, and Word continues to insert symbols, one or more symbols may be set up as AutoCorrect entries.
On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options, click the AutoCorrect tab, and then see if the Replace box contains the symbol Word is automatically replacing. You can either delete the entry by selecting it from the list, and then clicking Delete, or turn off AutoCorrect completely by clearing the Replace text as you type check box.
Text style changes unexpectedly
If Word keeps applying unwanted styles to text, you can have Word prompt you before updating styles. On the Tools menu, click Options, click the Edit tab, and then select the Prompt to update style check box.
Word keeps formatting text as headings
If Word continues to format text as headings even after you've cleared the Built-in Heading styles check box on the AutoFormat As You Type tab (Tools menu, AutoCorrect Options command), clear the Define styles based on your formatting check box under Automatically as you type.

I was using Word in Office 2000 and it worked.
