Extracting pictures from PPS file & LightScribe DVDs

I received by e-mail from my relative a PowerPoint file containing 10+ colorful pictures of very rare photos of climatic events that he took with his digital camera (such as the clouds movements above hurricanes, tornados, thunderstorms, lightning bolts, typhoons, strange color sunsets, etc.) so that I can view them as slideshows on my computer.

I just found out that he died in an accident a few weeks ago. His wife told me that she could not locate that PPS file on his desktop or the original mpg files (his laptop got destroyed in the accident as well). And I want to extract those pictures from the PPS file as individual mpg files and them burn them onto a DVD so that I can have them enlarged (to at least 20" in width) in professional shops, and then mount them up as a display at home, and to present a set to his son in memory of his great photographic work.

Can anyone tell me how ?

Mext problem:
I have found a lot of stores and Internet Sites selling LightScribe DVD+R, and I have not seen one which sells LightScribe DVD-R.

Can anyone tell me:
(a) Does such thing as LightScribe DVD-R exist in the market ?
(b) Where can I find them, if they exist.
(c) If I burn my movies on LightScribe DVD+R, could they be played on
the usual commercial brands of DVD Players (such as Toshiba, Sony,
Panasonic, Philips, LG, etc), at all, or as good as DVD-R ?

I can't tell you much about the DVR drives, but I can tell you that blowing those pictures up to 20" is probably a lost cause. The original file doesn't loose to much when put into a power point, but any average digital photo won't blow up that large and keep much definition unless it was taken with a 6 or 7 megapixel camera. I'll look around to see how to get them out, but it will be a while.

Open Powerpoint and then File > Open and navigate to the PPS file with the photos in it.

You should then be able to see the files and detach them - I think.

AFAIK, only DVD+R is currently available although -R may follow.

Are you aware that LightScribe is gray-scale only and painfully slow (up to an hour to "print" a full image)?

Buy an Epson R220 for $99. It prints on CDs and DVDs, in full color, and takes a few minutes per disk.

Question #1:

To extract the photos: Open the ppt file, File > Save AS and select "TIFF" in the Save As Type box. You can save them as JPEG but I suggest TIFF. You will see an option to save every slide or just the current one.

Question #2c:

If the player support DVD+R, then it should play, LightScribe disc or not.

DVD-R and DVD+R are different formats. A little like Betamax and VHS were 25 years ago. In the case of DVD's however I do not believe there are any major advantages to one versus the other. However, you have to have a player that will play whichever version you have burned. Fortunately, nowadays, most recorders and players will accept both formats, but you have to be sure before you buy or burn.

After playing for a couple minutes, all I could figure to do was copy from the ppt and paste to somewhere else, like a word document. I can't for the life of me see how you would pull them out of a powerpoint in the form of the original jpeg (or whatever). I suppose you could scan and print from there, but I'm sure one of the bright contributers here can figure out something a little more sophisticated.

However, OneBigNewbie has mentioned wanting to save as .mpg files. I may be wrong but I believe those are movie/video/animated image files. I do not know if the above will work for .mpg files though Irfanview can apparently handle them.

Another idea is PrintScreen|copy to a graphics editor (MSPaint, IE, Irfanview,etc.)|Save As whatever image file type you want. But again, I do not know if .mpg files can be created.

Thank you everybody for your help.

I have used Falcon's method, and got the pictures in tiff, and then re-saved them as jpegs. They all come out wonderfully clear on my 19" lcd screen.

My next challenge is to see if their photos, once enlarged, come out as clear as on screen.

Also, I have found that LightScribe DVD-R's are now available. But I have to place special orders for them because the stores do not stock them at all.

Actually, don't resave them as JPEG. You'll get better prints from the TIFF's ... just print out from the original TIFF's that you extracted from the ppt.
