    Cannot Access Window's Update

    Hello

I just bought Trend Micro's Pc-Cillin and Anti Spyware programs and installed them and ran them and found alot of things. Now I discover that I'm missing some system files.

I can't go to windows update site since it runs javascript and it seems my javascript and activeX controls are not running even though they are checked in my settings.

I go to the windows update page and it's completely white....blank. The site name is listed above however, but I cannot access it. I can't use my Search funtion on my computer through the start menu as it's all blank as well. I also went to pc pitstop and got the error message saying I was not running javascript or activeX controls, so it could not test my pc.

    I'm missing a startup file it seems. C:\WINDOWS\System32\dumprep 0

I ran a scan with error doctor and it listed these files as errors?...

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\LCODCCMP.DLL

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\msh263.drv

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\regsvr32/u/s

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\iac25_32.ax

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\13codeca.acm

I did not delete them, but just left them. I'm just not sure what to do at this point since everything was just fine before installing the trend micro programs.

I'm just needing to find out if there is any way I can access Window's updates without going throught the main page? Also, what can I do now to get my system back to working. I uninstalled the new software and went back to my original anti virus for now.

If you need any more information, I'll be glad to give it. Thanks so much!!

Well, short of doing a repair installation of Windows, you might try using System Restore first and go back to a point before all the troubles.

I must say that your situation seems to be unique. I haunt several online forums and I haven't seen the kind of problem you are dealing with. Trend Micro's products have proven to be pretty reliable. What was your former (now current once more) AV?

Hi Han and thank you for your fast reply!

I already tried to do a restore, but alas.....this will not work either. I get a blank white page.

I was using Avast professional, but I wanted something more powerful and I guess more bells and whistles. I did not have a virus, I just decided to update on the reccomendation of a friend who runs Trend Micro products.

I have the disc that came with my computer, but I really do hate doing a complete restore on it. But, I guess I will probably have to. I have everything backed up on an external hard drive, so it could be worse.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it!!

AttaGirl42--If you are missing a Windows System file such as dumprep, try Start|Run|type sfc /scannow|OK. Have your WinXP CD ready since you may be asked to insert. Stay by the PC in case you are asked to click Retry. It takes perhaps 30 minutes to run.
Hopefully that will fix the missing file problem.
The other files mentioned all seem legit (though one is not a file, but rather a command--a little wierd) and many are connected with video cards and codecs. It should not hurt to leave them alone. You can run a search on each at www.google.com and read about them.
Now can you get into Windows Update and System Restore? And have the other problems gone away?
If not, and the only problems were Windows Update and PitStop, I would suggest putting them into your Trusted Sites. That automatically allows ActiveX controls and javascript to run on those sites.
I understand you uninstalled PC-cillin using Control Panel|Add/Remove, but still have the problems.
Perhaps a bit out in left field, but a solution for a blank Start menu used to be to use TweakUI.

Look under My Computer|Drives and be sure that every box is checked.
