    Media Player Plug-in

I blame myself for not making this clear.

I appreciate all the time you took to research these links you provided for plug-ins, but most of them are for IE or else they are ones I've already looked at and decided they wouldn't work for whatever reason.

So I guess it's time to give up. The only plug-in that ever worked with Netscape in the best way was crescendo and it is no longer available to be supported on a web page.

Actually, Internet Explorer (Microsoft) now uses ActiveX instead of Netscape-style plug-ins.

Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer

    ...

    SYMPTOMS

Netscape-style plug-ins do not work after you upgrade Internet Explorer by installing any of the products that are listed above.

Some examples of Netscape-style plug-ins include QuickTime by Apple Computer, Inc.; Finale MusicViewer by Coda Music Technology; and AlternaTIFF by Medical Informatics Engineering.

    CAUSE

The versions of Internet Explorer that are listed above (sic, listed below) do not support Netscape-style plug-ins.

    RESOLUTION

Contact the manufacturer of your Netscape-style plug-in to inquire whether the manufacturer has a version of the component available that is built on ActiveX technologies. Apple has provided an ActiveX control that restores the QuickTime plug-in for Internet Explorer versions 5.5 SP2 and 6. Please visit the following Apple Web site to download and install this control:Developer information about the QuickTime ActiveX plug-in by Apple Computer, Inc. is available at the following Apple Web site:
    STATUS

    This behavior is by design.

    MORE INFORMATION

The Internet Explorer versions that are listed above (below) continue to support the Embed and Object tags and ActiveX. Content creators can continue to use the Embed tag for components that are built on ActiveX technologies, as has been the case since Internet Explorer 3. A few examples are the Flash and Shockwave products from Macromedia, as well as SVG Viewer from Adobe Systems. For additional information about the Embed and Object tags and ActiveX, please see the following Microsoft Web sites: The third-party products that are discussed in this article are manufactured by companies that are independent of Microsoft. Microsoft makes no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding the performance or reliability of these products.

    APPLIES TO

    Windows Media Player
    Troubleshooting Playback Problems

    ...

NOTE: You may experience some problems with streaming media content in Netscape Navigator 6. The plug-in architecture in Navigator 6 has been completely redesigned, which causes compatibility problems with existing plug-ins. Microsoft is aware of the issue. No workaround is available at this time. The Windows Media plug-in remains compatible with earlier versions of Netscape Navigator and other browsers.
    http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;q281356
Netscape Navigator May Not Play an Embedded Stream

    SYMPTOMS

When you use Netscape Navigator version 6.x to browse to a Web page that has embedded Windows Media Player content, the embedded media content may not be displayed. Instead of the Windows Media Player content, a blank box with a Click here to get the plug-in icon in the center of the box is displayed.

If you click the Click here to get the plug-in icon, the Windows Media Player 7 download page is displayed. If you download and install Windows Media Player 7 and return to the previous Web page, the embedded media content still does not display in Netscape Navigator 6.x.

    CAUSE

This behavior can occur because either the Windows Media Player plug-ins for Netscape Navigator are not compatible with Netscape Navigator version 6.x and these plug-ins are unable to play an embedded stream or file. This behavior is not observed with the same Windows Media Player plug-ins with the earlier versions of Netscape Navigator 4.x.

    WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, remove Netscape Navigator version 6.x and install the earlier version of Netscape Communicator 4.x, which includes Netscape Navigator and installs the Windows Media Player plug-in for Netscape Navigator.

    STATUS

This behavior occurs with Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, and Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 with Netscape Navigator 6.0 and the Windows Media Player plug-in.

    MORE INFORMATION

This behavior can also occur with Windows Media Player 6.4 and Netscape Navigator 6.0 for Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 95, and Windows 98. Windows Media Player 7 and 7.1 do not automatically install the Netscape Navigator plug-in.

The third-party products that are discussed in this article are manufactured by companies that are independent of Microsoft. Microsoft makes no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding the performance or reliability of these products.

    APPLIES TO
    • Microsoft Windows Media Player 6.4
    • Microsoft Windows Media Player 7.0
    • Microsoft Windows Media Player 7.1

    Media Player Plug-in

The only way I see this applies to me and that is in a negative way, is that I don't have Netscape 6. I have Netscape 7.

I downloaded Crescendo player last night and it told me if I wanted it to play in Netscape that I needed to put in this file path:

    C:\Windows\ProgramsFiles\Netscape\Netscape7\plug-ins

Well that's the path I used to install it and it still didn't work.

According to this page, that should be:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape7\Plugins
(In other words, no leading "Windows" folder name and there should be a space between the words "Program" and "Files").

    Media Player Plug-in

Using SEARCH, I searched to see if I had written it down as you said here or as I said. When I put in C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape7\Plug-ins
I got an error message saying that the file was unavailable. It was talking about inserting a disk and asking me to make sure if I was on the internet and was telling me it might have been moved.

Well, I was on the internet when I checked, I have no disk and don't know why I would need one and I certainly don't think I moved it.

Do you have any idea what this means? Does it mean I would need to uninstall it and reinstall it? Or what?

And BTW Amradillo is where I found the same info you are talking about. That's where I downloaded it from and that's where I got the file path from.

Do you think there's EVER going to be a chance to isolate the problem and get it to work right?

    Success with Crescendo at last!

    Spyware (and/or any interested parties)

Just wanted you to know that I finally got Crescendo to work. It plays my midi in both IE and Netscape.

Thanks for the help you tried to give. Unfortunately, I had to go to another website to get this done. Still, you helped as much as you could and that's worth something.
