    more on help and support

    at http://gladiator-antivirus.com/forum...hp/t28317.html
I found something that looked useful, but instead of getting the command prompt message "helpsvc does not exist" I got the message "an instance of the service is already running"

    anyway here was the advice:

    Hi John,

If Help and Support is mssing, you'll need to reinstall PCHealth.

    First let's triple check.

Go to Start >run and type cmd.exe
    Press enter

Copy this command and right click the comand window. click Paste onthe menu:

    CODEsc start helpsvc

What response do you get? Possibly that the service doesn't exist?

If that's the case, reinstall PCHealth.

    Go to Windows\inf

    The inf folder is hidden.

    Find this file:
    pchealth.inf

Right click on it and click install.

You may be prompted for your install CD.

    more on help and support

wll, as per my previous post I right clicked on pchealth.inf and picked install, but was told the installation needs the file dataspec.xml, which is not on the emachines cd or on my hard-drive.

so I give up and am sorry for pestering you w my own fix ideas.

am hoping you can tell me how to compress the 'HELPCTR.EX_" file on my drive and that that will do the trick. or?

    Panda

    Crunchie

thanks re asking around on help and support issue. I can also call emachines tech support and see if I get someone who can take me a little further than the chatroom tech guy did--they do seem to know something about restoring things w/o the XP cd, since they're the guys who chose not to provide one w the computer . . .

on Panda insallation issue, I got the same error message again, that installation conflicts w "eTrust EZ Viruscan"

will post ONE MORE hijackthis log in next message, then results of registry search for "etrust" one more time

sorry again this is getting so complicated; on this issue I can try reaching the panda people to see whether they know a workaround or, alternatively, whether they can simply associate the registration numbers they issued me w the older iteration of the program, which installs just fine . . .

    idea?

sorry for continuing to cast about wildly for ideas but:

the 016 entries don't show any etrust stuff, but there are entries for bitdefender and trendmicro

any chance that Panda is just generating a wobbly error message and that what it really wants me to do is delete the activex controls for these other two competing virus scanners?

    just a thought . . .

    reg search

lots of hits for "etrust" but all are really for "CertificateTrust"--not possible that Panda is mistaking that for the etrust ez antivirus, is it?

I admit to be wondering why Panda got upset with the 016 entry. IMO there should have been no error come up because of it. Neither can I see the others there interfering, but you never know. I think that Panda would be the one's to question in that regard.
As fot the Certificate Trust entries, again, who knows what may be interfering .
Did the Zone Alarm firewall come packaged with EZ?

What are the chances of you borrowing an XP CD to use to get the help files from?

    Xp Cd

XP CD should be easy to borrow if I can use an XP Pro instead of an XP Home (can get XP Pro from my dept at the university; Home will require some phoning around to see who might have one). I did read some stuff online about how that might not fix it if the disk is not already SP2 updated; not sure whether I can re-install from older disk and then re-apply the update patch (?). I think I'll try phoning eMachines to see if someone can tell me how to explode the HELPCTR.EX_ file (in 98 or maybe 95 there was an "explode" command that was easy to run from a command-line prompt to get the file to uncompress)

    Panda

    on the Panda front:

maybe I'll try deleting Zone Alarm in case eTrust got packaged with it
or deleting the activex controls for Bitdefender or TrendMicro using hijackthis (I can always download those again later)

or I can try Panda (but their support is really zany) to see why one version of installation file works fine while other doesn't; or wait till they put out a newer version of installation file; or try to get my registration and sweet 6-month deal applied to the older version of the program where it currently won't work . . .

will keep you posted, if you don't mind

    thanks again!

    aha?

    aha?

I tried uninstalling Zone Alarm & it said it couldn't complete the uninstall bc True Vector program or applet or something was in use by another program; that I had to stop whatever running program or applet or process was using True Vector.

    culprit?

    solvable?

(can also send you list of Running Programs via a script from the same site as the Reg Search script; or run Reg Search for True Vector or Vector . . .)

I think I'll try phoning eMachines to see if someone can tell me how to explode the HELPCTR.EX_ file (in 98 or maybe 95 there was an "explode" command that was easy to run from a command-line prompt to get the file to uncompress)
I read a post yesterday somewhere, that you can get the help and support files from the SP2 CD. It is probably the same if you download SP2 into a folder on your HD. It's a big d'l though.

One reason I never liked ZA is because it never wanted to leave. Can you uninstall it in safe mode?

I'm going to try downloading sp2, though I think perhaps it just updates files automatically, working as a patch, and that it's not possible to download the entire xp sp2 (what you would get on an xp sp2 installation cd); worth a try (also have a request out to colleagues in my dept to see if they have the helpfiles I need)

will also try getting rid of ZA in safe mode (was thinking about that) as well as getting rid of the activex controls for bitdefender and TrendMicro

if those fixes don't work, am considering either

    1. forgetting both issues--getting along w/o help console and forgetting the extra 3 free months of Panda

    or

    2. doing a "non-destructive" reformat and re-install--backing up as many program settings files as I can (I know where most of the key ones are) and then just re-installing the os and all the software. didn't want to do that, but it actually would probably only take me 4-5 hours over a couple of days, esp if I'm careful about just which programs I have on cd and which I downloaded and still have the installation files for. that would give me a clean start and should solve both my current problems.

but not until they fix my office computer (they migrated the profiles for all the computers to get rid of security flaws that I had actually already dealt with on my computer, and did it wrong so that I don't have viable computer use at work now for past week. agh!)
