Laptop/mouse conflict..
I've borrowed a Toshiba Satellite pro 440cdx P133/16meg from a friend for a trip I'm going to take. It has one of those little button thingies in the middle of the keyboard to operate the cursor. I've plugged a ps2 mouse into the appropriate ip jack to get something that I can actually use with some expertise (have you ever tried to use one of those little buttons to accurately move the cursor? Geez! near impossible) Anyway when the PC is booted I can just plug in the mouse and it works fine but if I leave the mouse plugged in during boot it conflicts with the built in cursor-mover and the cursor goes nuts running around and clicking on everything it can and I have to unplug the mouse and reboot. Anyone know how to temporarily disable the built in cursor-barely-mover so I don't constantly have to plug/unplug my mouse? I can't see anything obvious in control panel or anywhere else.
Thanx

You may need a driver disk for that mouse. Some are quite picky.

I tried installing the latest win98 intellimouse software and although it gave me a few new bells & whistles for the mouse it didn't solve the problem. As far as buying a USB compatible mouse I don't want to spend any more money.. I already had to buy a carrying case and I've only got the thing for a week or so anyway. I guess I'll just have to live with the regimen of unplugging mousie when I boot.

Under Mouse in Device Manager there should be a driver for the laptop's pointing device. You can disable (not delete) that and it should solve your problem.

Update..
so I had a fair bit of time while I was away to screw around with this laptop and found a proprietary Toshiba program that solved the conflict.
It, in this case, and it was not easy to find because there was a lot of clutter that I had to clean up, was in start/programs/toshiba hardware options.. it's a small program not unlike tweakui that allows the ps2 mouse to operate independently from the annoying Toshiba joyless stick. Has a number of other functions as well such as boot sequence, sound options, caching and a few other things.
the actual program is called hwsetup.exe
