How Can I Unlocked A Locked W2K OS?

I have a friend that has a computer with Win2K as the OS. He called me and said that when he booted up he got a message stating that "the computer is in locked position. Only the administrator can unlock it"
This computer had originally been setup to bypass the logon (name/password) and boot directly to the desktop. His kids apparently did something that caused it to go into a locked position. Is there any way to remedy this situation ?? Thanks ...

All you need to do to unlock it is type in the Administrator username and password. What they did is Ctrl>Alt>Del which brings a dialog that has the option to lock the computer on it.

Thanks for the reply SuperSparks; however, the computer was never setup with a password. They are not sure as to what the original name was either. It might have been "new user" but they are not sure. I ran into a similar situation a few years back when I used to use W2K, but forgot how I bailed myself out. If there never was a PW, what other options would one have?

And hopefully he knows the Administrator Id and password because if not we will not be able to assist - unfortunately.

Well you got your post in just before me.

The trouble is that as much as we like to assume all requests are genuine, there are some folks out there looking to 'crack' peoples passwords etc and since we have no way of telling the honest from not so honest, the AUP of this site prevents us assisting with password issues etc.

Someone may have some pratical hints to rembering things though.

Sorry that you have taken it as a personal slur on you because that was not how it was intended.

I'm sure that a moderator would have come back and told you the same thing if i had not and they may now clarify that this is the rules of the forum and not just my viewpoint.

As for the neighbourhood thing....well lets just say that post count might indicate more of an involvement in the board than length of time as a member.

You might also want to either change you email address or remove it to avoid spam.

Razor, please don't post your email address in a open public forum. Posting your email openly will get you more unwanted email and possible viruses than wanted email. There are much more better ways. People can email you through your profile here in the forum.

well I think since it is locked I belive(never tried it) you have to take the HD out, and put it in another computer as a slave and veiw the hard drive and replace some files. I wouldn't know what files to replace(with the extracted ones from the XP cd) hopefully somone can help you!

Razor, if you don't think there was a password, then just leave the password box blank. And the other thing that occurs to me is that if you do a hard reset then the computer ought to boot back into W2K with the automatic logon.

Reboot the computer it will remove the lock.
