Resolved [RESOLVED] Removing an icon from the taskbar.

    Hi all,

I just purchased a MagicJack (which, btw, works GREAT and I highly recommend it), but because the application always runs, it installs an icon directly next to the “start” button on my desktop. I know how to remove unwanted items from the right-side of the taskbar, but how do I remove the icon on the left?

    Thanks all,

    George

Try right clicking on the icon and select Delete from the drop down menu.

    Go to C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
You can delete the shortcut from there.

If it's running, it'll display that icon.
If you don't want to start it with Windows, uncheck it in msconfig.

Geopla--(The following assumes you have right clicked the Taskbar, then left click Toolbars and checked Quick Launch if it not already checked.)
If the icon shows next to Start that does not mean the program is running. That section, called the Quick Launch area, is for shortcuts, not for running programs. Have you checked in TaskManager that MagicJack really is running right after boot ? (Broni already suggested you uncheck any box associated with MagicJack in MSCONFIG. Do that first and reboot.) before looking in TaskManager.)
However, it is weird that the icon is not in the Quick Launch folder. So maybe the following will not work.
I probably have at least twenty shortcuts in my Quick Launch folder. I only let four show in the Quick Launch area. I do this by moving the little double-chevron "bar" over to the left. That squishes the icons in the QuickLaunch area up into a "hidden" menu that you can access by clicking on the chevron. You can also move icons remaining in the Taskbar over to the right by dragging. This allows you to control what is showing and what is in the hidden area. If that is not comprehensible, play with the icons in the QL area for a while.
Of course, if MagicJack has found a way to install an icon which is not a shortcut (explaining why it is not in the QuickLaunch folder) next to Start, then we have a problem. Right click on that icon, then Properties. Does the Properties window show it called a Shortcut? Look at the tabs.) or? Do you get any other right click options, like Preferences or Options? If so, one may allow deletion of the icon.
I was going to end by saying that if the icon is not a shorcut, can you contact MagicJack? Then I started to read some of the reviews on MagicJack. Probably 10% favorable and 90% unfavorable. But of course I suspect complainers are always more likely to post.
Here is one monster review (note I am directing you to page 28 of many since that has a post at the bottom that may help you figure out which item in MSCONFIG belongs to MJ. But there are pages and pages more.)

How to uninstall MJ? It ain't easy

P.S. I was thinking I would buy MagicJack. Now I suspect not.

    Hi Welshjim,

When right-clicking on the icon, only two choices are present (and available) . . . restore and close. I suspect that you are correct stating that MagicJack has found a way to install an icon which is not a shortcut.

As far as the MagicJack itself, I have found it to be absolutely wonderful. Two of my friends also have one, and both of them are 100% satisfied. The voice clarity is perfect. In fact, of the numerous calls I have placed, not one single person could even detect that I was not on a conventional telephone.

Also, MagicJack has recently released new software, and a “fix” which may have resolved earlier problems that I am not aware of. Lastly, I have attached a link to another review site. Observe that the product received an overall “4” rating. I’m obviously not a salesperson for Magicjack, but I can say that at least in my experience, the thing works GREAT.

As always, thanks for the help,

    George

gep--Did you try dragging the MagicJack icon over to the right, bypassing several other icons in the process? Then drag the chevron over to the left to force the hidden area. With luck you will not have to look at the MJ icon, but it is still easily available by clicking on the chevron.
It occurs to me that the chevron may not be there before you have created a hidden area. Maybe it is a standard separator bar--seven or so dots in vertical formation. And you will have to Unlock the Taskbar (right click on a blank spot on the Taskbar) to be able to drag things around.
Did you look at MSCONFIG to see if you can stop MJ from starting at boot?
P.S. What happens when you chose "Close" from the menu when you right click the icon? If it stops MJ from running, the icon may go away. In any event you will not be wasting resources by running MJ when you are not using it.
What happens when you left click the icon? I'll bet the icon is a shortcut and that will open MJ.
P.P.S. I did not mean question your feeling that MJ is a good product. (You can see that the reviews by others run from great to poor.) If it works for you and you feel you paid a fair price, then I am pleased for you.

    Hi Welshjim,

I can’t drag the icon even after unlocking the taskbar. I have included a picture of the taskbar showing the icon, and a picture of the icon after right-clicking on it. This is not a big deal, but I would prefer not to have the icon show at all times.

    Thanks

    George

That's a pretty standard "you have a program running" type of icon in the taskbar. Not sure you can get rid of it excet to slect the Close option.
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

    Hi Steve,

That is kind of what I thought. Funny part is, even if you hit “close”, it doesn’t. It simply returns the application screen to the desktop. As I said before, not a big deal.

BTW, my Norton 360 had the same issue, but Norton offered a way to eliminate it. Now, only the small icon on the right of the screen is visible.

And to Welshjim, who is always so very helpful, I can remove the program (thus, the icon) from my start-up, but because I do want the MagicJack to load on boot, I will just leave it for now. Also, I completely understand that you were not questioning my feelings about the device. There ARE many reports that it is either GREAT, or a big POS.

Talk to all of you with my NEXT disaster.

    George

It's down to the programmer as to whether that icon shows in the Taskbar or not, there is not normally any way of removing it yourself. It might be worth sending them an email about it, they might want to fix it for the next version.

George, Have you checked Start>Programs>Startup folder to see if a MagicJack shortcut is in the Startup folder. If it is just delete that Shortcut and that taskbar button should disappear. Make sure that it's a shortcut by right clicking it, choose Properties and see if it's indeed a shortcut.
