Can't install USB device, really need your help!

I have a P2 400 Mhz with 2 USB ports. I had a DSL modem plugged into one and a Wingman racing Wheel in the other (these things are lots of fun!). Anyway, I just bought a new digicam with a smartmedia card and bought a USB Memorex SmartMedia Card Reader to download my pics. I disconnected my Wingman, ran the included CD software, rebooted then installed the Reader. The computer recognized that a new USB device had been installed and began loading the necessary drivers, when it looked almost done, a blue screen appeared that said:
A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C1837276 in VXD APIX(02) + 00002736. The current application will be terminated.
    * Press any key to terminate the current application
    * Press CTRL+ALT+DEL again to restart your computer.
You will lose any unsaved information in all applications.

I tried to remove and re-install this device about a dozen different ways, with no success. (I tried following the directions at least 4 or 5 times as well).

Please help, I can't figure this one out!

Ben, thanks for the reply, but it wasn't the digital camera hooked to it that caused me problems (in fact, the Olympus USB connection worked great). It is only the USB Smart Media card reader that crashes. Ive tried everything I could think of. Any other suggestions? I contacted Memorex, but they just instructed me to reload the drivers (that was one of the first things I did).

Do you run 98FE or the Second edition?
What's your ASPI layer look like - run aspichk.exe to get a report on the versions.
What have you installed that uses the ASPI layer - this will usually be burner software such as EasyCD or Nero etc. (the version number is important on the Roxio stuff).

Is Windows Media Player 7 installed?

I guess it is 98FE (First Edition?, 4.10.1998?).

I don't know what would effect the ASPI layer. I tried running aspichk.exe, but I couldn't find it anywhere.

I do have EasyCD Pro 95 (v2.0.053) running. I also can't find Windows Media Player anywhere. I looked for media* and can't find it.

IMM - I ran aspichk.exe and got these results:
    WNASPI32.DLL version 4.01 (978) 11/12/96
    WNASPI.DLL version 4.01 (978) 11/12/96
    APIXVXD version 4.01 (978) 11/12/96
    ASPIENUM.VXD version 4.01 (978) 11/12/96
ASPI is properly installed and is fully operational.
One host adapter has been detected.

taznutzcan - I have tried re-installing the drivers about a dozen different ways. I don't know what "PnP" is, but in device manager, under USB Port Driver, the eUSB SmartMedia Adapter has an exclamation point. (I tried deleting and reloading the device from there and reloading the drivers as well, no change) If I reboot with the device connected, it boots in safe mode.

    Still trying.

    No progress yet.

    Any more suggestions?
My other devices work fine in this port, it seems isolated to the SmartMedia Reader device.

C'mon guys! I haven't been able to solve this one yet.

It actually worked at one time, but caused the blue screen and would not boot up properly. My point is, the reader wasn't defective.

    MPTech,

This really would seem to be a problem with the ASPI driver files you have (winaspi.dll, apix.vxd, wnaspi32.dll, aspienum.vxd). Most likely the conflict/problem is with apix.vxd and/or wnaspi32.dll. Your EasyCD installed an Adaptec set of these files, but your version of EasyCD is really old and as a result the aspi files are really old too. The most current version of those files is 4.70 (but 4.60 would be fine).

In any case you'll likely need to do one of two things: 1) try and update the aspi files and see if that solves the problem, or 2) replace the files APIX.VXD and WNASPI32.DLL with the original MS supplied versions of these files off your Win98 CD. I would try to update first and if that fails then revert to the MS files.

    To update your files:
    1) Download this file and unzip it to a temporary directory.
    2) Boot your PC to a dos prompt (don't go in to windows and don't use a dox box within it), and switch to the directory where you unziped the file above.
    3) Type in dumpasi. This will create backups of your existing files.
    4) Next type in instaspi. This will update the aspi files. When the bat file is done you'll get a message about rebooting your PC. Reboot and let windows come up.

After doing the above see if your problems are resolved.

If you still have problems then you will have to use window's SFC to restore APIX.VXD and WNASPI32.DLL from your win98 CD. WNASPI32 needs to be restored to the Windows\System subdirectory and APIX needs to be restored to the Windows\System\Iosubsys subdirectory. Once these files are restored then reboot and see if things work this way.

Hopefully one of the above solutions will set things right.

    MPTech,

If DrMDJ suggestion doesn't resolve problem, you might try what I did as follows:

I had a similar problem installing a SanDisk USB card reader on my IBM Aptiva PII400Mhz with 2-USB ports and a 4-port USB hub. My #1 USB port has a 100MB ZIP, the #2 has 4-port hub running printer and scanner. If I plugged into the hub, would get fatal exception OE at times or in Device Manager the yellow !. I bypassed the hub and plugged reader into #2 USB port with same problem. I then pulled the ZIP from #1 and plugged reader - boom - it worked without problems no OE no !.

During the problem period, searching various forums and troubleshooting, I learned that some USB devices prefer the primary USB port (in my case, facing back of tower, on left)as does ZIP drive.

My procedure now is to unplug the ZIP drive from #1, then plug reader - this works fine. Point is, maybe you should plug your DSL into #2 USB, then try reader in #1 (I never boot with reader attached). If that doesn't work for you (I don't have DSL, so don't know if this will cause a problem), unplug the DSL leave both USB ports empty, boot, then plug reader into #1 and see if it works.

I was going nuts trying to get reader to work and had about 20 emails with SanDisk tech support (they could not solve problem - just keep uninstalling & reinstalling drivers). Funny thing is, I have no problem with reader on my office machine PII500 w/2-USB ports and basically same programs as home. Same with my laptop, but it only has 1-USB port, so can only have one device connected at any time.

    Hope this helps.

You hit the nail squarely on the head. IT WORKS LIKE A CHARM! I've saved the download and instructions, for future use. So was the problem my old CD-R/drivers (it is almost 5 years old)? I was wanting a newer (read faster) CD-RW anyway, would I still have this problem?

THANKS AGAIN! It was driving me nuts!
