No idea what has happened; may have been hacked???
Unable to log-on to my G-Mail account. Using a desktop with W7 and a legacy mail program, namely, OE6. It all works well, until tonight. Nothing apart from the password error message.
Tried via the internet but again, the password is incorrect. Asked to verify to restore the account, but the mail received code just goes to empty and asks for the code again. Tried with the phone (Yes, it's Me) but that does not open G-Mail.
However, I can open my account on the phone without entering any verification.
On the computer, I do have a second, rarely used G-Mail account and that is working fine with OE6; but not if I try to open with G-Mail on-line.
Don't mind resetting the password but not able to get to a place where I am able do that. So what is next?
Grateful for any suggestions.
Thanks and toodle pip
Don't mind starting a new account but presumably, am unable to use the same e-mail address, which I would prefer not to change.

I have been using FF for years and no problems. But my e-mail program is OE6 and the p/w is not displayable. But it has not been altered (to the best of my knowledge!) However, I can no longer sign in with FF to my G-Mail account either. A six digit number sent to my g-mall address is not showing because I cannot sign in. The message to my phone (Yes it is me) does not open my account. The six digit number text message to my phone, when entered into the G-Mail page, is doing nothing and just opens in another box to enter my number.
Same with my wife's G-Mail account. BUT, my alternative G-Mail is working fine. I have just created a new account and again, it is not working. The test e-mail is sitting in the out box.
And it all seems to be working fine when accessed on my phone with no singing-in needed. Just hit the G-Mail icon and all is good to go!
How do I recover my account if I cannot recover my account?

I already knew the answer to my google query of.. "can I use IE6 for gmail" but here is the result.
No, you cannot use Internet Explorer 6.0 for Gmail as it is no longer supported by Google. You'll need to use a supported browser like Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Safari.
Gmail's Browser Support:
Google has stopped supporting Internet Explorer, including version 6.0, for Gmail and other Google Workspace applications.
Why the Change?
Microsoft also ended support for Internet Explorer on June 15, 2022, and Google's decision aligns with this.
Supported Browsers:
To access Gmail and other Google services, you should use Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Safari.
Update Your Browser:
If you are using an unsupported browser, it's recommended to update to a supported browser for a better experience and security updates.
You can also go directly to Google/gmail and ask there:
Thanks for the replies and I know that my question makes it appear that I have no idea what I am doing. I know that OE6 was part of IE and that both are no longer supported, but...
Having tried a number of other browsers and e-mail programs, the only one I like is OE6. Won't explain why since that is not really the issue. X years ago, I found a 'worked on' stand -alone version of OE6 which once installed, has been running just fine with Gmail, for the last decade.
I have attempted to follow the recover password directions but appear to be trapped in a loop. To reiterate, two g-mail accounts for me, one for my wife. My wife's and one of mine are getting the OE6 password error message, but one of mine (had it as a backup for years), is working fine.
And, I can access all my G-mail messages on the phone by just hitting the G-Mail icon; no logging on, no passwords. straight to the In Box.
When trying to log-on to G-mail on the computer, I do receive the message that my password was changed 40 hours ago. At a guess, that could be around the time I started using a new phone but I did not change the p/w.
Using forgot my password is going nowhere. I am sent a security code to the selected address; obviously my main is not working since I am not logged in, but the secondary take so long to appear on the phone, that by the time it show, the time has elapsed. Using the Yes, it's me on the phone works, but the G-mail computer screen the asks to confirm by another security message. Again, my main is not working, and the secondary take so long to appear, again, a time-out.
I have created two new G-Mail accounts to test, both using smpt.gmail.com / pop.gmail.com and 465 / 995 as in the account that is working but both receive the same OE6 error message.
Never encountered this problem when I originally set-up OE6 around a decade ago. As for Google no longer supporting, I do understand, but there has been no problem until a few days ago, and my secondary account is still working.
So don't know how to recover the account and change the p/w as I cannot get any access.
The last working outgoing port number I had in my legacy "The Bat" email client that worked with Gmail was 587. (I still use that port number)
I eventually had to upgrade to a new email client (Thunderbird) to get gmail to work after they (gmail) upgraded security protocols a couple of years ago.
VirtualDr email notices are not working.
Check back regularly for responses.

Big sigh of relief; heart pounding with excitement!!!
Thanks for all the suggestions but even more searching and I found the answer deep in the Google help(?) files. Don't know why it changed but I needed to recreate the AppPassWord. Google sent it, entered that into the OE6 password box and all the emails from the last few day downloaded.
Now mine is back up and running and will apply the same to to my wife's computer.
After all the anguish and testing that the POP3/SMPT info was correct, all I had to do was enter the AppPassWord into the OE6 password boxes. Quite simple.
Now would be a good time to defrag the HDD and ake a new image.
Quite some time ago, don't recall the reason but may have been when I up-graded from W2K to W7, found that IE and OE6 where not part of the package. So tried a number of different e-mail clients (why is the word clients used when in reality, it is a program?)
Tried Thunderbird, The Bat and anything else that was free. Since I don't like change, was not happy with any of them, but specifically, I do not want to have To Do lists, updated contacts, updating dairy, meetings, a lost of all the email I have sent/received from individual contacts, etc and all the other bells and whistles that are supposed to give me a better user experience. They just annoy me, particularly as I am not a business, and have no use for them.
To make matters even more challenging, the OE6 address book in wab format, was not easily imported into anything. Don't recall what I did but managed to get the addresses transferred to one program but not in the simple Address Book format.
Following a lot of research, I found a version of OE6 that someone had removed from IE, adapted somewhat and could be installed as a stand-alone program. Exactly what I wanted, easy to use, no added flim-flam and familiar. Plus, my existing wab files where just there.
The only fly in the ointment was Gmail, etc. Again, further research and I found the App Password that allowed old software (legacy) to work. This time, I had forgotten about the App Password, but having obtained a new one and inserted it into the OE6 password sections, everything is back to normal.
And my wife is a happy bunny; when she wrote long e-mails in Japanese, only about half the text was sent. Totally unexplainable. Today, with her renewed App Password, a test sending a very long Japanese message to me (it was only a test as I don't read Japanese) and it all was sent and received.
Taking everything into consideration, a good computing day and I have earned lots of Brownie points.
Sorry to revive this thread so soon after I solved the issue but.....
A few days ago, again, my gmail failed to do its thing using OE6. I do have two gmail accounts, and the secondary is fine, my main one is not (again.)
Since the last solution was to get a new app password, I did that again, but still I get an OE6 username/password error message. Unfortunately, did not keep a record of the most recent last app-password as I never thought I would need it again.
First question, the Google App Password is supplied as four blocks of four letters with spaces. I copied and pasted that into the OE6 password and all was fine. When I have done that today with a new app-passwork, still the error message. I deleted the password and input manually, but should I be inserting the spaces or not? Not that either way has made any difference.
When I try to recover the account, the first option for 2 stage verification is to hit Yes, it's me on my phone. But my computer screen refreshes to the same screen. Select the second option, which is my email, and can pick up the code on my phone, but entering that into Google and the screen jumps back to the 2 stage verification page. There does not appear to be a way to change my user password unless I can log-on which I cannot.
So what can I do to get my email working again? I know I could probably set up anew account but I do wnat my original email address, not a new one.
Unfortunately, did not keep a record of the most recent last app-password as I never thought I would need it again.
As you have seen, it is best to never delete anything related to issues like this. Save it instead to a secure location, preferably an encrypted password manager like KeePass.
What happens when you try to access your gmail account from a web browser? Does the password reset procedure work there?
