Transfer rate problem
I began offloading files to an external HDD and it took forever just to calculate the space required. When it finall started moving files, the transfer rate was a whopping 800k! Sometimes it reached 1,4 meg. Something is seriously wrong, so I switched out the Western Digital and connected a Seagate, same thing. As far as I know, I've got the corrct storage drivers installed and there's plenty of space on the destination disks.
What could be wrong?
Thanks - rev

Did you try a different USB port? I'm assuming you're using USB3, but that's slow for even USB2.
Did you check Device Manager or Event Viewer to see if there are warnings or errors?

I have not checked Dev Man or Viewer but I did learn that it's nothing to do with the destination disks.
> that's slow for even USB2
The two connectors for USB2 and USB3 were not labelled 2 and 3 so I might have stuck the wrong on the wrong header - but as you say, that's even slow for USB2. Maybe I should get a 5 1/4" floopy drive...

Uh, so you didn't try the ports that are connected to the back of the motherboard?
Make/model of the computer or motherboard might help us help you.

USB 2.0 and 3.0 use totally different headers on the motherboard. 3.0 has 19 pins and is much larger than 2.0. Also, USB 3.0 ports have blue blades in them while 2.0 are black. https://www.positioniseverything.net/usb-color-code/
File transfer speeds will vary widely depending upon the size and type of files being transferred as well. From what you describe and having no way of knowing what hardware is involved my first guess would be a defective USB drive controller or incorrect drivers.
