Copy from CD
What ho one and all,
Ignoring the fact that I am still running W7, I have a bit of a copy problem.
Have a CD with a 10 minute mpeg file on it. As I am trying to sell a collectable item on eBay, the info on this mpeg is rather important and I would like to include it with the sale.
Trying to copy from the DC to an HDD folder and at around 8 minutes, it all freezes with the message Incorrect DOS Function. When playing the mpeg from the DC, it all works until freezing at around 8 minutes, although the timer is still counting. If I move the cursor to a round 8:30, then the DC continues to play.
I have tried to convert to mp4 but again, just freezes at around 8 mins. Have added the reg entry suggested from a Google search, but still, the same issue.
My guess is the CD has a problem although there are no scratches on the surface.
What 's next?
Grateful for some suggestions.
Thanks and toodle pip

Another option could be to split the recording from the CD into two parts. Extract/Record the first part up until the freeze then record the second part after the freeze.

An excellent idea, fink.
Also, once you recover the recording, it might be time to make sure that you have backup copies on multiple devices and storage types, to avoid CD/DVD degradation issues and other potential types of data loss.

Thanks for all the suggestions; I will give them a try.
Thought I had ti solved last night when I used another computer, Wow! The file played with no problems whatsoever, so I immediately copied it to a UDB thumbdrive. Again, no problems at all and it still played.
Inserted the thumbdrive into my regular desktop and receive the Cannot Render file message. So tried with a couple of other video tools I have (don't understand them!!) and got either missing demuxer message or incompatible DOS. Have no idea what either of those imply.
Will investigate further, and if I do recover the file, I will certainly be ensuring I have a couple of back-ups.

To date, nothing is working. Have installed some of the recommendations. Unfortunately, neither of the two files I have is readable by anything of the programs.
The original mpeg on the CD does play on my computer up to 76%, then locks. If I skip forward to around 80% it continues to play but because of the glitch, will not copy. As I said, tried on another computer, and all seems fine so made a copy, but that mpeg file does not even open on my regular desktop and none of the recovery software even 'sees' it in Open File.
Will keep trying. I may be able to find another copy from an ex-colleague, but as the company went into liquidation 20 years ago, it is unlikely that an ex-colleague will be able to find their disk!
Just tried Online Audio and after getting 10 100%, message saying unable to read audio file.

If you were able to copy the file and play the copy on another computer, then the file copy should be OK. That would also indicate that the issue might be that some CD/DVD drives do not like the disc, but others have no problem with it. It will just be a matter of converting the file so it works on your other ancient computers. There should be some software somewhere that can do this.
How large is the file? If it is not something proprietary that you cannot share, you could upload it to a file share site and fink or someone else could try to convert it.

Finally, after a too many attempts, I though I had success. A program called Free Video Cutter; managed to get a thumbnail to fully load the mpeg. Set the edit from 0:00 to 7@40 (before the freeze starts) and let it do its thing.
Yes, an mp3 video of 7:40 secs but when I hit play, it is all just a black screen.
Ain't the digital world great!!!

The file is 125kb so not large. Free Cidwo Cutter did read the file up to where the glitch is at around 76% and appears to be working past that point. My plan was to extract and save the before and after the glitch, effectively cutting out around 20 seconds. Managed to save the first, but the latter 22%, nothing, just saved a blank screen.
Which I don't understand because, when playing with MPC-H or VLC at the glitch point, it freezes. But if I drag the cursor past, the second part, (which it the part I realty want) also plays.
Have tried to 'convert/save with VLC but all I get for the first part is a 7 minute file with the VLC logo. Don't know how to make VLC actually save the cut file. X attempts and tweaking Tools/Preference has made no difference.
Other editing programs do not even read the file.
As for converting with either Free Make Video Converter of Handrake, again, neither will read the file.

Problem resolved but not in any high tech way. Found a contact for one of the previous directors and he as sent me a copy of the mpg file.
So now good to go.
