Resolved [RESOLVED] Play AVI Video Files On TV?

I'm never throwing away 45+ years of VHS tape but I also love all the conveniences of having movie in simple video files which I can play via a thumb drive to almost any device.

However many of my home movies are AVI files which will not play one my TV. Likewise with some other older file types.

Is there an app or an update to play AVI files on my TV?

    Sony XBR-55A8H
    Bravia 4KUR3
    Version 9

Yes I know I can convert the AVI files on my PC but that's not the option I'm looking for.

    Thanks.

I use VLC on my Windows 10 PC and my Android phone to play troubled files. Years ago I was able to get basic Windows Media Player to play AVI files so it hasn't been an issue on my PC.

Downloading VLC as an app on my TV? SUCCESSFUL!

When I tried to login to Google Play Store I realized I'd disabled my TV's wifi for privacy reason so I reenabled it and logged into Google Play Store. Due to a lack of a keyboard on my TV this process took about 20 minutes.

In Google Play Store the only option to search was to speak into the TV which I couldn't get to work. But it wasn't needed. When the apps are displayed just scroll to the bottom left corner under "Media Apps." VLC is the third app there.

I downloaded and opened VLC. YES! It played all my media files including AVI... even better than my TV's default media app!

Since I still don't like having my TV open to hacking I disabled the wifi and VLC still worked fine so you don't have to be logged into Google after VLC is downloaded. My TV's "Input" section allows me to check the most used inputs like Blu Ray and USB for easy access. I added VLC to this list.

I'll report any problems in a week but thus far I will use VLC for all my videos on USB as it's working better than the TV's "media player device" where videos often stall or fail to load especially if there's a lot of fast forwarding.

Thus far I've continued to experience a better playback with VLC on my TV than with the default video player.

I've had to play around with the settings on VLC a bit. It likes to categorize EVERY video it's come in contact with alphabetically. Since I was doing so many tests with it that's about 250 videos on the memory sticks I've attached. Since ALL the videos are part of the library they're still there when the physical file isn't so when you click to play it can't because "file not found."

There is a way to clear the history and way to view the files in folders on the USB which makes it easier for me to categorize and find what I'm looking for.
