Can't get gmail search to work

Copilot ssays you have to Enable Search but I can't find anything about how or where to do such a stupid thing. That was today so I'm assuming it's still true. How, where is that done?

Are you accessing GMail usnig a web browser or an e-mail client program like Outlook or Thunderbird?
