YouTube error: "If playback doesn't begin shortly, try restarting your device"
On a fairly regular basis, I get this error when attempting to play a YouTube video without the video beginning play in a prompt manner. The videos occasionally do begin to play, but not after at least a 2 to 3 minute wait but usually not at all. And to make this even more puzzling, if they do begin play, they do so without sound. Then if I insert the headphone plug and remove it, the sound begins
Multiple searches led me to the alleged solution - disable hardware acceleration in the browser's system settings. However, disabling hardware acceleration did not fix the problem. I have also updated the sound, video and display adaptors via the device manager within control panel. But none of this made a difference.
Rebooting my system will fix the problem, but only temporarily. Typically within a few hours after a reboot, the problem arises again.
Might anyone else have encountered this issue and found that disabling hardware acceleration did not fix it? If so, what is the fix for this issue?

What happens on other video sites? Have you tried using different browsers? Which one are you using? And which operating system?
If the problem only occurs with youtube videos then it's possibly related to their new anti-ad blocking algorithms. Try bypassing any ad blockers you might be using on youtube and see what happens.

Thanks for the reply.
Other browsers > the issue is present using Firefox; I am using Chrome
Other video sites > they will play in a prompt manner, but without sound (tried with a Facebook video). Then if I insert and remove the audio plug, the sound comes on
OS > Windows 10

It sounds like a hardware issue. What happens if you just leave the headphones plugged in and use them to listen? If they continue to work with no issue then it could be the jack itself or the software/hardware that switches the output from the jack to the speakers.
Are the speakers plugged into the jack in the back of the computer? Or is it a laptop with built in speakers? If you're using external speakers try plugging them into the front headphone jack to see what happens.
What is the make/model of the computer?

Thanks for the response. Your comments led me to try something. If I start a YouTube video without the headphones plugged in, I see the problem described in the OP. Then if I start a YouTube video with my headphones plugged in, the video plays flawlessly all the time. Seems like some kind of audio or headphone issue.
Computer is a Lenovo T490 ThinkPad. Headphones are plugged into the side jack. There is no jack in the back.

It does sound like a hardware problem related to the headphone jack. I'm not any kind of laptop/hardware expert so I'll leave further suggestions to others here who may have a look at this thread.
Doing a google search for "laptop speakers cutting in and out" did lead to this somewhat related item about a Lenovo laptop...

Is it still under any kind of extended warranty?

I had a similar issue, and here?s what I did. Since I first noticed the problem in my browser, I started troubleshooting there. For me, it wasn?t just YouTube videos that wouldn?t load. Videos on almost any site weren?t working properly, and in some cases, they behaved erratically. For example, videos on Twitch and Vimeo didn?t work or only the sound played while the video was just a black screen, the same happened when I tried to run a game in demo mode. To resolve this, I went into the advanced settings of Chrome and disabled hardware acceleration. I also reinstalled my audio drivers. Before downloading new drivers, make sure the version you?re installing doesn?t have known issues reported by other users. If necessary, it?s better to install an older but stable version. You might also want to check your sound settings in Windows. Ensure the correct playback device is selected, such as "Speakers" or "Headphones." For additional troubleshooting, verify the default format, such as 16-bit 44100 Hz, and consider disabling sound enhancements in the "Additional Device Properties" menu, as this can resolve conflicts in some cases.
