[RESOLVED] Needing help to change a bad laptop screen to a separate monitor!!

I have a Dell Inspiron 5558 laptop and the hinge broke on right side, and I kept using it, but then the monitor was blinking then had black spots on it, then it was gone, just white screen with lines on it. I am hoping this was just screen, not my data... I am wanting to run it from a Monitor, but so far, I can't figure out how to connect them together? My monitor only has vga that I can hook to laptop, but my laptop doesn't have anything I can hook it too???
If anyone knows what I need, please let me know...I know I need a adapter, but the one I ordered did not work....Thanks for any suggestions and information I can go too.. Thanks!!

What adapter did you order? An HDMI to VGA adapter should work.

Just FYI the adapter you mention above is for a display port not HDMI. That's why it won't fit. Display port is a newer version of HDMI. They do look similar but obviously are not interchangeable without an adapter.

I finally got my order in and it worked...Thanks so much....I got my data on the monitor, so my screen on pc is bad.... I am wanting to backup my whole computer to save all my data....What would you suggest me to use for that?

The backup method(s) to use may vary, depending on whether you are planning to get the screen replaced on the existing computer. If yes, you may want a full system image backup in addition to a file and folder backup.

For file and folder backup, you could just use the free Microsoft SyncToy or the free version of SyncBack from 2BrightSparks to copy the files and folders that you want to save to external media. In addition to the usual folders, you may also want to backup web browser favorites and program data from things like Outlook or other application software. If you have lots of that sort of data, it may be easier to just make an image backup with a tool that allows you to extract files from the image.

Also, you should have at least 2 copies of the backup data, in case of failure of one of the copies.
