    Resolved [RESOLVED] OOPS! I GOOFED!

Working on a HP2000-299wm laptop that has a split screen : wide black borders on each side of the display screen.
I wanted to change it into full screen mode.

In messing with the display setting, I saw an option to change a setting from 100% (original) to 500%. I went for 500%,
thinking that perhaps that would fix the split screen setting. A HUGE MISTAKE!

I have been trying to get into safe mode with no luck. I read that by holding down the F8 key while booting would put me into safe
mode. That doesn't cut it. It does not respond to that movement. BTW, it is setup with Windows 10, formally Windows 7.

Any suggestions would surely be appreciated. Thanks.......

Try tapping F8 instead of holding it.

The Fn + F? key gives you some monitor type of settings... Look on the keyboard to see which F key to use.
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

The problem is, I don't remember what that item window was, that showed 100-500 ? When I brought up the resolution window, it was located at the lower left side of the screen. If I knew what the name was, I could search for it ..

    See if this helps..

    1. Go to Windows Settings (Windows key + i) –> System –> Display
    2. Here you can see the current screen size under Resolution.

Perhaps a screenshot of what the 500% problem actually is would help. I still don't quite understand what it is yet. Did you try the F8 tapping thing?

I don't see anything in Display settings that has a 500% setting. It sounds more like a video driver setting, rather than a Windows setting. The fact that you had "wide black borders on each side" means you probably needed updated video drivers.

The attached thumbnails tells the tale . It is the custom scaling thats the culprit.
Thanks Steve for that info. And thanks to all for your help also. I will try to bring up the "Custom Scaling" & see
if I can get it resolved. I'll post any results. Thanks again & Happy Holidays for all....

No luck as yet. Have spent hours trying. When I first boot up, the lock screen picture is perfect.
But then when I log on evereything becomes enormous. At some point I am able to get to the
CMD prompt. According to the web, one can get into safe mode by a cmd prompt. So far, I have
found nothing that works. Any ideas on that subject? If worse comes to worst, I may have to reformat
& start all over again. I am hopeing, I wont have to do that..

Uninstalling or rolling back your video drivers would probably help if possible.

Do you have an external Monitor you can hook up? I think it'll be set the same but I would try anyway.

    VIOLA!!
Finally got it fixed. Adding a second monitor really helped. I had to find a sentence that said: Turn off custom scaling. And when I did that, bingo...

Now all I need to do, is find a way to get rid of the split screen. The lock screen comes up as full screen, but the desktop screen is devided into 3 parts, 2 black on each side of the main screen. Thanks once more for the help : ))

One thing gets fixed only to open the door to something else. I am unable to get online because the laptop is in airplane mode. And its greyed
out so I cannot turn it off. I tried a lot of suggestions I found on the internet but nothing works so far, I swear, I think MS is out to get me......
