    Tagging photos

tagging photos ... being able to look through a folder
of photos and select a few by tagging them is so important

and I ve found faststone to be the best I could find
I want to tag a photo I hit the key to the left of z on keyboard
    and the photo is tagged.

but I just opened up a folder of 30 photos onto faststone viewer
and I see most of the thumbs are x ... looking through them they
    are just black

yet when I right click and open a pic in documents the picture is there
they are simple jpgs but for some reason faststone is refusing to see them

any ideas what could be going wrong ?

and is there any other software that will allow me to go through
a folder of pics and allow me to easily tag any of the pics as I go along?

    thanks for help and advice

Are the thumbnails that are black all the same file type (extension)?

Can you post a screen capture of what you are seeing?

What happens if you use Windows built in photo viewer to look at those specific RED X'd pics? I use FastStone viewer as well and if a pic is corrupted even slightly that's what I get. On occasion I've had to use that Windows program which isn't as fussy to view them .

that could be the answer, if faststone sees any imperfection its
    not showing the pic

if I just click on the photo it does come up ... must be in windows viewer ? I right click on the phot and one option is add to favourites.... which could be one way of tagging ? but begs the question how do I look at the favourites ?

there must be another fastone like photo viewer out there with
an easy ... one click ... way to tag photos .... somewhere !

What happens if you re-save the photos/images in question from Faststone to a new file name? You could also try converting them from .jpg to .png and then back to see if you can get a "fixed" version that will show a thumbnail image.

Have a look at IrfanView. I used to use it a number of years ago. I'm sure it's tagging function is straight forward. I don't recall it being real fussy opening any kind of pics.

Q: How can I tag a file during browsing?
A: See the Hotkeys help file page. Tag a file with X, untag with SHIFT+X, use SHIFT+Q to show all tagged files in Thumbnails window.
