Some program icons missing from Taskbar

A few weeks ago, I noticed that the typical icon for my PaintShop Pro 9 changed, both in the taskbar and in the Start,It was replaced by a "generic" icon. I thought it was due to PSP9 being so old it might have been affected by something in Windows 10 updates.

Recently, I also noticed that the same thing happened to Adobe Acrobat. So far, those are the only two programs where the icons have changed.

I have no idea what happened or how to solve that. Any suggestion?

    Do the programs still work?

Yes, they work fine. It is just very inconvenient when I have two generic icons on my taskbar, to select the correct program.

Drill down to the EXE file for one of the programs.... Does it show the correct icon?

And or right click on the exe and select SEND TO -> Desktop (create shortcut)

Does the new shortcut have the correct icon?

OK.... You could use that to replace the broken ones.

If you right-click on the shortcut, you should be able to set the icon in Properties.

For the Taskbar quick launch buttons, try unpin and then re-pin the shortcut.

I tried all those suggestions. The only partial success is that I am able to pin the PSP9 shortcut icon to the taskbar. (option #3 - How to Pin Apps/Programs’ Shortcuts from File Explorer to the Taskbar) While it is pinned, the icon shows up fine. If I unpin it from the taskbar, and open the program, the generic icon is back.

I have not been able to change the icon in the Start menu at all.

If you right click on the NEW Desktop PSP9 icon, do you see a PIN TO START option?

Yes, that works too. So it is pinned to the taskbar, but not the Start. If i try Pin to Start, it still has the generic icon.

    For grins - do this:

Enable the "show hidden file" option of Windows Explorer and navigate to this location "%userprofile%\AppData\Local

    ", delete "IconCache.db",
restart "Windows Explorer" process from task manager.

    Close it - Reopen it

Only if I pin the shortcut to the taskbar will the correct icon come back. Otherwise, it is still the generic one.
And in the Start, it is also still the generic icon.
