Microsoft Edge Not Closing Properly Using 'X'

I have recently found that Microsoft Edge now does not close properly when I use the 'X' in the top right hand corner. Task Manager shows multiple entries of Microsoft Edge running in the background.

If I close Microsoft Edge using 'Settings and More' > 'Close Microsoft Edge' then it closes properly with Task Manager showing no Microsoft Edge entries running in the background.

Has anybody else had this problem?

Any help and advice would be appreciated.

Microsoft does not really want you to close Edge. The default setting is for it to continue running in the background even when you have closed all Edge windows.

Here are some links detailing this, and ways to fix the issue:

    Thanks for your reply.

I turned off 'Continue running background apps when Microsoft Edge is closed' but this made no difference.

The registry key referred to in some of your links does not occur in my registry

My Windows 10 is fully up to date via Microsoft Update and my Microsoft Edge is also up to date - Version 102.0.1245.30 (Official build) (64-bit).

Your links are dated last year or early this year and as this problem has only occured within the last couple of days, I think it may be due to something in the latest update to Edge.

Any more help would again be appreciated.

Does Edge show in Task Manager immediately after a clean boot, without you ever having started it? If so, one of the links I posted has information on how to prevent that from happening. See if that is effective.

I'm following along with this.... It takes a couple of minutes before my copy of Edge closes all of the entries.
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

Try typing the following command at a normal CMD prompt to close all instances of msedge.exe:

    taskkill /f /im msedge.exe

    (and press [Enter]).

    Hi jdc200

Yes, 5 entries of Edge do show in Task Manager immediately after a clean boot.

I use CCleaner which is how I found that Edge was not closing properly.

In CCleaner Windows Startup I found the entry HKCU:Run MicrosoftEdgeAutoLaunch_695A57AF162A65CF28F05C1E8210B412 Microsoft Corporation "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" --no-startup-window --win-session-start /prefetch:5 was enabled. So I disabled it and now Edge does show in Task Manager immediately after a clean boot.

However, Edge still does not close properly when I use the 'X'

    Hi Steve

My copy of Edge doesn't appear to close all of the entries like you say yours does.

PinguJohn - even after five minutes or longer you still have entries running?

    Hi Steve

Opened Edge and closed it using the 'X' in the top right hand corner.

Yes, still had 5 Edge entries in Background Processes in Task Manager after an hour.

Which antivirus are you using? I've recently started using Avast and it, for some stupid reason, thinks it needs to limit some of what I can set up and alter in my browser's settings. I don't use Edge so I can't have a look but in Firefox it brands it with a note and won't let me change random things within like cookie settings. I can disable it with a regedit but every time the browser updates itself it reappears. See pic...

On one of my Windows 10 systems, Edge is not running after a clean boot. I have not had a chance yet to check my other Windows 10 systems. I will check when I have some time and post the findings. I have all of them set to NOT start Edge when Windows starts.

I have found on one of my Windows 10 systems that if you do start Edge, and then close it, it does NOT close all background instances. I used Task Manager and was finally able End Task on all of them. This took some time, as they continued to restart themselves numerous times before I was able to get all of them ended. They have not re-appeared again. Since I do not use Edge for anything, this is normally not a problem unless Windows auto-redirects a link that it thinks is incompatible with a different browser to Edge. That option can also be turned off.
