    Which monitor???

    What ho one and all,

It has been many, many years since I bought my monitor, a Dell Ultrasharp 2007 WFPb. I have been happy with it for all uses, including and mainly photo editing ( I have a colorimeter to hopefuly, get things better than OK.) My computer (Dell Dimension 9200) is running W7 with 8gb of RAM and a Quadro P2000 GPU.

But now I need a new monitor and my searching is leaving me in a 'tear my hair out' state.

There are too many to choose from. What is USB-C when compared with the USB port on my current screen? What is DisplayPort and will my GPU support it?

What does 4k do that a 24" or 27" with 92ppi will not do? Would I need a better GPU for 4k?

I like the Dell UltraSharp, but just want something that works well for photo editing and will not break the bank. How does one decide on a Dell when there are so many versions (U2421E/U2422H/U2722DE/U2723QE, etc.) The 24 or 27 I unerstand. I guess the 21,22, or 23 is a newer model. But with is E ,H, DE, QE?

    Grateful for some suggestions.

    Thanks and toodle pip

If you are using a Quadro P2000 video card, that probably has DisplayPort connections on it. Check yours to make sure. You would want a monitor that supports DisplayPort input, or whatever your video card is using. The Quadro P2000 will support 4K monitors.

For 4K versus non-4K / ppi comparison, check out the link below:

The letter suffixes on the Dell monitor models often indicate version or other options. Don't worry about those, just make sure it has the ports and specs you are looking for. You can use Google to compare the model numbers if desired.

USB-C is faster then USB-A. Your computer does not have USB-C capability, unless you purchased an add-in card for it, and even then you would probably not get full speed out of it on that old Dimension 9200 system.

    Thanks for your response.

Looking at Wiki, pretty sure I have two DisplayPorts on the GPU. Plus another; not sure what it is but one of the older ports that the monitor uses.

You could always get a DP to HDMI cable also. Most monitors have HDMI ports nowadays.

The more I investigate, the mosre confusing!!!!

My current (non-working monitor is a Dell U2007WFPb) and am looking for a larger secreen. Happy to go with a Dell Ultrasharp, but I see I can get a 24" 4k version (https://www.dell.com/en-uk/work/shop...or-accessories) for a good price.

Would a 24" 4k monitor be 'sharper' than a U2422H? Basically, what are the advantages of 4k over full HD?

I do want to do photo editing and have a colorimeter, so hopefully, can tweak to for best sRGB (or even RGB) performance.

    Thanks

You can google-> compare S2721QS to U2422H and find article/specs like:

Comparison between Dell S2721QS vs Dell U2422H
    https://www.displaydb.com/compare/de...qs/dell-u2422h

A lot of the info will be hard to digest.... Going to a Retail store that sells them is something to consider.

If you are running older apps, they might be really really small on a 4K monitor (HiDPI).

Thanks for the various suggestions. Decided that I don't need but would like a 27", so went for the more affordable option of a Dell U2422H.

Arrived today and looking good. will get around to calibrating it soon.
