    Boot to Desktop

    What ho one and all,

As per usual, things are challenging to get a W8 computer running as I want it, for my wife.

Both my wife and I want it to boot, straight to the desktop; it more of less does so but stops on the screen below which requires the Enter key to be pressed.

    Attachment 15621

What can I do to get it to boot to the Desktop without any additional input?

    Thanks

I am not sure how you would have gotten that screen in Windows 8. I assume that you did NOT do a clean install of Windows 8 on this "new to you" computer, but you mat want to scan it for malware.

Links on how to boot to desktop:

Note that if this is a screen that appears AFTER the computer has already booted to the desktop, then the links will not help. Check your startup programs to see what is starting.

Thanks for the reply; I will check the links later. I have been lazy and it is actually W8.1

You are correct, we were given this computer that had been cleaned to 'factory' standard. When I was setting it up, the various options appears and this is my message, certainly not likely to be a virus.

I was trying to set it to boot to the desktop but there was some box requiring and entry; now it is annoying although pressing Enter is not a game changer.

Been there, done that but still the I Love You screen appears. The next screen is as in the linked video, a wife name/ Admin splash screen then the desktop.

Have run various malware scans and all clean.

If necessary can live with it.

    Been where, done what?

Did you look through the Startup programs? Post a screen capture of what you have for Startup programs.

    What did you do exactly?

I think you are trying to bypass the logon, rather than boot to Desktop. For Win8x, "boot to Desktop" means by passing the Metro/Modern menu screen.

    You can try Autologon:

Taskbar / Properties and the Boot to Desktop checked.

When you ask, 'What did I do?' do you mean when setting up the system. If so, I have no idea. Seems that W8.1 wants to 'phone home' and needs a MS user account set up, which I don't want. So don't recall what I did to get around that but ended with this screen.

I is only my wife using the computer (and sometimes myself) so don't need anything password protected. To make my confusion worse, I have installed Classic Start menu and have no idea what Metro/Modern menu screens are. I hate the hover the mouse somewhere and the screen fills with c**p that MS think I need. Plain vanilla XP style Start menus are the way to go.

    Will try the AutoLogOn file.

Metro/Modern is what you get in Win8x instead of the Start Menu.

    You said:

So what boxes, etc were you messing with? Again, it sounds like you were affecting the Metro/Modern at startup, not bypassing the logon.

Now I have my knickers in a real twist. Installed AutoLogOn and ran it. All seemed fine.

Today, when I restarted the computer, it wants the UserName and Password. I have not idea what I originally input!

Hit the Reset password option to assess the rest Wizard, insert the USB as asked, and the message appears "This is not a password rest disk." What does that mean? And I do not have one.

I know there is the option of do something with an MS account but as neither of us have an MS account, that option is not available

Have tried the Other LogOn, which I guess is via MS, I get the Other / Welcome screen but then 'the password is not valid' message and that I can rest the password at a web address (given) but how if I cannot log on?

    What next?

So it was able to bypass the logon before? If the password was wrong, it wouldn't be able to log on. If you just forgot the password, there's not much we can do. Autologon would not have changed the password. All it does is provide the username/password.

You would have had to make the password reset drive BEFORE you forgot the password.

Thanks. No accounting for stupidity. Do not understand why you don't know my password!

Obviously, when initially setting it up a few months ago, I did manage to auto log-on and the AutoLogOn file just reverted back to password required.

Not what I was planning but via a system restore, have managed to get back to as it was.
