Access violation - can't write to Start Menu

I've learned that the attached error means I can't write to the Start Menu. How do I fix that?

    Thanks - rev

Did you try the fixes in the link I posted?

It might help if we knew exactly which apps you are installing. They might have their own fixes.

    I didn't notice you'd posted a link, thanks. I'll check it out.

I get the error no matter what I'm installing, all the latest errors have come from installing Sonar plugins. Everything goes fine, even if the installation needs C++ but right at the end, when it tries to write an entry to the Start Menu the error pops up.

Whatever I was installing gets installed properly, it's only the Start Menu that's giving me grief. I hardly ever start a program from there so it's not the end of the world but I'd prefer to have access.

BTW: I'm on Win 7 and the article is for 10 - but I can see how most of the solutions would work on both.

None of the fixes I see are about the Start menu. Is there an option to not create a Start menu folder? You could always create shortcuts later.

That link does cover the IPersist error but audio plugs don't offer you a desktop icon because they're very rarely run from the desktop.

No, the installation tries it without asking.

The other fix suggested (Controlled Folder Access) doesn't appear to apply to Win 7.

I do have 5 win 7 updates installing as we speak so I'll what happens and get back to you.
