Unknown Restore Points Listed In System Restore (Windows 11)

Windows 11

System Restore shows 2 entries one for the 10/08/2023 and the other for the 14/08/2023 both with the Description and Type as Windows Update.

However, when I check Update History in Windows Update, it doesn't show any Windows Update entries for these 2 dates.

Has anyone else noticed this and what does it mean?

Any help would be appreciated.

I'd guess that the update failed.....or it checked your system and determined that you didn't need the update... Or maybe you interrupted the update... Maybe the update history didn't update...

Patch Tuesday was August 8, 2023, so there were probably no available updates on the other 2 checks for updates, so the idiots a Microsoft, instead of checking to see if any updates are available FIRST, and then, if some are found, creating a Restore Point, just create a Restore Point first and then check for updates.

Windows Update was run on the 08/08/2023 which successfully installed the following 3 updates:-
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - v5.116 (KB890830)
2023-08 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for Windows 11, version 22H2 for x64 (KB5028948)
2023-08 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5029263)

However, although these show in Windows Update History they do not appear in System Restore for 08/08/2023

Maybe these are the ones that are listed in System Restore on the 10/08/2023 and the 14/08/2023

The System Restore is done BEFORE updates are applied, so your 08-08-2023 updates would not show up in the 08-08-2023 System Restore. They may be in the later System Restore points.

System Restore can sometimes be helpful, but is not always capable of fixing things when Microsoft makes a mistake with one of their updates. A much better tool would be some software that creates a complete system image of your Windows installation that can be saved to an external storage device for use in restoring your system in the event of a hard drive failure or a catastrophic "update" from Microsoft.
