Did you check the BIOS or use SpeedFan or similar software to see what the CPU and other temperatures are showing?
I have not, I've never seen a computer run like this so I can't really do anything experimental. Would love advise on what to do!

Speedfan download.. https://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php Click on the SpeedFan 4.52 link and install it. It will show temps for the CPU and other things incl the speed of the CPU fan. Shouldn't rise too much above 60 Degrees C most of the time and maybe peak briefly at 70 when opening a program or browsing to a page online with lots of graphics. Idling should be closer to 55 C ish.

VirtualDr email notices are not working.

Tried yesterday to do a system restore from safe mode, but it failed twice - it would go through some process, then reboot, but notify me that it was not successful.

Have the laptop started today in regular mode and I'll try to download these programs.

I'm having this issue in both safe and regular mode: When i open window like internet settings that large skyblue box pops up (Not blue screen of death) that makes it look like the program is loading, but it just closes automatically. So I cannot even connect to the internet at this point. I tried to run MBAM install from a usb but it went nowhere as well. Maybe I can somehow tackle this from another avenue? Using the actual windows OS is incredibly slow. For example, hit ctrl alt delete.... wait 4 or 5 minutes.... let that load.... click task manager... wait minutes again... etc. And that's if it loads at all, many, if not most clicks, do nothing.

At this point, if you are wanting to salvage the existing OS, removing the hard drive and connecting it to another PC as a slave/second drive and scanning it from there would be the way to go.

One other the would be to boot the computer from a live Linux CD/DVD or USB drive. If the Linux OS is just as slow, you have a hardware issue. If Linux runs OK, then you have a software issue.

This was in non-safe mode. It says HDD 100% not sure if that's diagnostic? To be sure, there is almost nothing installed on this HDD.

HDD 100% would indicate that the hard drive is being accessed continuously. That would either be hardware issues or potential malware.

Should I try to set it up through another computer or is that just inviting potential malware to spread? We're all on the same network as it is of course...

But I can't seem to run much of anything on this laptop right now... been trying to install MBSetup.

Try running through these fixes for 100% disk on Win10:

I tried all of yesterday to get the partition program installed and I think it finally did. FWIW I ran the malwarebytes and it took 18 hours to scan fully but did not report any malicious entities.

You don't need to install the partition program to try the fixes. Only at #11 does it say to do a disk check with partition wizard, but you don't need it to do a disk check.

Oddly it did finally install, and it did appear to run after start up (which I had to select). I did not see a progress/finish report however.

Still, even if it did run the fix portion, the computer is still abysmally slow. At this point, I really don't care if I have to erase the whole hard drive and start over. THere wasn't much on there except for Windows. Would I need to re-purchase windows us my only concern? (Windows did come with the Lenovo laptop pre-installed, but I've never wiped a computer/hard drive I cared to save.)

Before going to all of the trouble to re-install Windows, it would first be worth trying to determine if you have a hardware or a software issue. If you have a hardware issue, a re-install of Windows won't fix anything.

The easy way to do this is to boot the laptop from a CD/DVD or a USB flash drive that has a live Linux distribution on it.

    Steps to try this test:

Check the laptop BIOS for the settings needed to boot from a CD/DVD or an USB flash drive. Verify that they exist and set the to boot from your choice of drive first in the boot order.

On another working computer, create your choice of a bootable CD/DVD or bootable USB flash drive for Linux Mint.

Boot the laptop using the boot media that you created. See if it is still ultra slow. Report back results.

Wow what an ordeal... literally wasted some days because you have to do something and come back to the computer later. But I finally was able to get the boot fixed by holding down f2 during reboot and the USB linux finally launched. It seems to run very nice and normal! I opened firefox and it all loaded in under a minute, search result seemed normal and ran an internet speed test which showed 18ms ping, 100 DL and 11 up.

OK, if Linux is running at normal speed, then your problem with Windows would appear to be software related.

A Windows re-install would be the next thing to try. A clean install would likely work, but you might try a repair install first.
