    Locked out

    What ho one and all,

I have an elderly neighbour who became a widower last year. He is not computer literate as his wife was essentially the operator. Since her passing, he has been unable to get into the computer because for whatever reason she had a boot password which no-one knows.

I am wondering about offering to help but not sure if I would make things worse. Internet research tells me a way to reset the password but is there a chance that I could completely 'fubar' his computer?

The alternative is to remove the CMOS battery while having a coffee then reinstall it. Apparently, this will clear the BIOS password memory and one can then reset.

Is either of these a reasonable possibility?

It's unlikely that the original user had a bios password. It would probably have been a Windows password which would be a different thing entirely. The bios password would prevent Windows from even asking for it's password since you would not get that far in the boot process.

As far as dealing with the Windows password we aren't allowed to discuss that here in VirtualDr because it's expressly forbidden by our acceptable use policy which you can read here:

    Don't believe everything you think.
