W7 install size
Yet another!!!!!
Googling for a W7 install size, I see 'Windows 7 itself takes up 10-12GB of space, then you have the pagefile, hibernation file, System Restore backups and possibly Service Pack backups.'
I have a 100gb partition for W7, certainly I have hibernation set, and 8gb of RAM. Not many programs yet, but the largest is PhotoShop CS6. Of the 100gb, I currently have just over 50% free.
I know XP (32 bit) does not take up so much space, but a similar 100gb partition with around 100 programs (CSĀ£ and CS6, AutoCad, Office 2000 being the largest) and I have around 60 % free.
WinSXS is around 10gb. I am concerned about running out of space. What can I do to reduce the install size?
Thanks and toodle pip

If you don't use hibernate you can easily turn it off and get rid of the large hibernate file. I've never used it on a desktop.. may be handy on a laptop.

WinSXS info: https://www.howtogeek.com/174705/how...indows-7-or-8/
By default, the hibernation file is 75% the size of the RAM. If it is a desktop, I'd just disable hibernate like Fink said.

I frequently use Hibernate with XP but if the size is dependant on RAM and XP only uses 3 gb, and the W7 install has 8gb.
I did a deep search, tidy and defrag and the size has reduced to around 40gb but that is still before some of the larger programs are installed.
I find that the built-in SystemClean does not (in my opinion) do a very through job with old installer files, etc and even seems to leave a lot in the temp folder.

40GB doesn't sound unusual to me. Win7 is 2 generations newer than XP, so you'd expect it to use more disk space.
As mentioned in the link I posted, you can clean up old Windows Updates from WinSXS. If you've installed all the Windows Updates, you should see that option in the Disk Cleanup Wizard. If not, you need to install KB2852386. Make sure you choose the right version (32 or 64 bit).
