If your adapter was powered by the laptop, then it should have powered off when you shut down the laptop. Disconnecting it would not have helped.

JDC2000, thank you for all those links. I am probably going to purchase the Anker USB C to Dual HDMI Adapter. Since my laptop is located close to my router and I mostly use it as a pc. Even though, my laptop is located close to my router, I use it as a wireless setup. Would it be an benefit, if I purchase a 10/100/1000 ethernet cable and use it as a wired setup?

I always use a wired network connection when I can, as it is faster and more secure. Does your laptop have an ethernet port built in?

No, it doesn't.

Then an adapter that has an Ethernet port in addition to dual HDMI ports might be the way to go.

The few links that clicked on for the dual HDMI with ethernet port were either discontinued or unavailable. I was looking to get the following below. The ethernet adapter doesn't say that it is win 10 compatiable though. Are these 2 adapters good or is there a better option?

Those 2 would work. You would need a USB-C port and a USB 3.x port on your laptop.
An alternative is below:

The one in the link you provided has only 1 HDMI.

I am considering one from the 2 links under alternative in your last reply or this one below. I am wondering why the Ludtom and the one below say total ports is 4. Also, the Ludtom says it has "temperature control." I am wondering how much cooler this one is to justify the extra bucks. Of these 3, is one superior than the others?

I think they may be referring to USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports.
As for "temperature control", check the reviews to see if any have information about how hot they get when in use.
All 3 are fairly similar. The LionWei unit has 3.5 mm audio if that is a concern.

Just an update on my Cable Matters USB-C multi-port adapter. I never did purchase a new adapter. A few weeks after I posted this issue, I tried my adapter again and magically it worked and has been working ever since then. That is weird that it didn't work after trying it numerous times on various days and now it does.
