    HKEY\CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID is a huge folder, so you can't just "create" it. Are you sure it's missing?

    I will have another look when I exchange the hdd, but I am pretty familiar with finding entries and also amending (from details I have found on the web) but pretty sure that it is not there.

    I wonder if it is 'hidden' but I have the Do Not Hide Hidden Folders box checked as I like to see everything.

    What do you mean? HKEY\CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID is in the registry. It's not a hidden folder.
