    Space problem

I've got to copy 4 TB of movies off a drive because my TV can't see disks that big. Then I'll create a partition and see if the TV likes it.

The problem is I don't have enough free space anywhere to copy off all the movies.

Can I copy half of them off, create a partition and then shrink it?

    Thanks - rev

Yes. Press [Winkey][R] type in diskmgmt.msc and press [Enter]. Right-click the partition which you want to shrink, choose "Shrink Volume...", set the amount of space to shink and click "Shrink".

Does the partition I'm shrinking (that contains data) need any headroom?

To be on the safe side I'd leave a little bit ... a few gigs or so.

I would do that anyway to allow for additional movies - I guess my question is will it allow me to shrink into the data area? I don't want to lose anything (win 10)

No, it should pop up an error.

I'd move a bit over half of the movies off, defrag what's left (if it's a HD), then shrink.
