Win 10 on a new laptop

The last OS I was using was win xp pro. I never used win 10 and just opened my new Dell XPS 13 laptop. I am trying to navigate my way around win 10. Firstly, I connected a pair of headphones to my laptop and I didn't hear any sound from it. I still heard the sound from my laptop. hDoes anyone know how I can disable the sound from my laptop, so the only sound I will hear will be from my headphones?

JDC2000, thanks for those links. I tried going though those links and I stlll can't figure out how to get sound from headphones when I plug them into the headset jack on laptop. Like I said, the audio plays find on my laptop but just doesn't come out of headphones. I can't figure it what could be the cause.

Also, I had a 5-channel speaker system connected to my pc. Does anyone know if there is a way to connect them to my Dell XPS 13 laptop?

In the Lower Right corner of the Taskbar (by the Clock) find the Icon that looks like a Speaker.
Right Click on this Icon and Choose Playback Devices.
A Window should open, choose your Headphones from the list, Click on Set Default!

Hi Bugspop1. I only have 1 listing in playback properties when right-click on speaker icon. It says "speakers/headphones - Realtek audio default device" and has a green checkmark on it.

What is the FULL model number? XPS13 is a series.
    Ex. XPS13 9350

Did you update the audio drivers or not?

Midknyte, I tried searching for the model number but I can't find it. I looked in system information and all I found closely to a model number was 9R4L701.

In device manager/sound, video, game controllers. I have 2 listings: intel display audio and realtek audio. Which one would I select? I assume I just click update drivers in that section?

    I can't find anything with 9R4L701. And that's not the Service Tag number either. I'm guessing it's a 9360 or 9365.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dell_X...C_Late_2016.29
    XPS 13 (9360, Late 2016)

Released in October 2016, the 9360 is similar to the 9350 but with the new Intel Kaby Lake processor (7th generation I series) and a Thunderbolt 3 (with USB 3.1 Gen 2 support) in lieu of the mini-DisplayPort.[35] The 6th generation XPS 13 Developer Edition was announced on the 59th anniversary of the Sputnik satellite. The XPS 13 Developer Edition comes preloaded with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.
    XPS 13 (9365, Early 2017)

The 9365 is similar to the 9360 but with a flexible hinge allowing it to fold over into tablet mode. The i7 version features a Kaby Lake i7-7Y75 CPU with passive cooling. This CPU is the successor to the Core m7-6Y75 (Skylake Y-series), so the chip does not reach the performance level of other Core i processors due to the lower TDP.[36]
Intel Display Audio is for the HDMI port (or adapter). You'd need to check the Realtek audio software settings, or the Dell Audio software settings.

Where do I check the software settings for each of them and checking them for what exactly?

Can you confirm the model number? Did you look on the bottom? The sticker might also be in the battery compartment.
jdc2000 already posted some fixes. One of them was to reinstall the audio driver. Unless you can provide the exact model, we can't find out which driver it is.

Did you mess with any startup settings? If you disabled any audio programs like the Realtek Audio Manager, that could be a problem.

There is nothing on the laptop that states the model number. I checked the instruction pamphlet and it said 9360. All I really did so far was install a few programs. I was use to using startupmonitor where whenever I would install a program and it wanted to add something to my startup, a popup window would appear and I would click no, so my startup wouldn't get cluttered. How can I check to see if anything was modified in my startup?

Should I go to device manager/sound, video, game controllers, and click uninstall and then click install for just the realtek audio listing?

If right clicking the speaker does not work, then you have a Realtek program installed
Control panel > Realtek HD audio manager
Just opened it up on my laptop and that is where it is for me.

I am getting confused. Train, I have the same listing when I right-click on speaker icon as I do when I go into control panel/sounds, which is, "speakers/headphones - Realtek audio default device" and has a green checkmark on it.

That might be the issue. Why are you using that software? It's not necessary. I don't use that program, so you'll have to look at what it disabled. I'm guessing it removed the Realtek Audio Manager.

If the Realtek Audio Manager is running, there is a slightly different speaker icon (orange, I think). I suspect you are talking about the default Windows speaker icon. Go into Control Panel and see if there is a Realtek applet there. My Dell doesn't have Realtek, but it has a Dell Audio applet in Control Panel.

Midknyte, what I meant about using startupmonitor was that I used to use it on my pc that had win xp pro. I liked how it would give you a popup every time a change was going to occur in the startup. I did not install it on on my laptop. If I was suppose to have the Realtek Audio Manager on my laptop, I suppose it never was installed because when I received it.

Why was it a good idea to use startupmonitor in win xp, but not needed in win 10?

I assume you meant to check if there is a Realtek applet in the control panel/sounds section? I don't see any listing titled Realtek when I click on contol panel or in the sounds section of the control panel.
