    Windows 8.1 will not update

I have tried SFC and the BITS trouble shooting tool and each said it found issues and were fixed but still am not able to update windows or defender. It continues to search and never stops. Also it does not how I have ever done and updates which I have been updating on a regular basis since I have had computer couple years ago. Any help would really be appreciated. I am 72 yrs old so please speak my language.

Thanks for the reply.....I tried option 3, no change. I tried the Microsoft Fix Tool ss troubleshooting.jpg that was the results and it still does not work. Just keeps searching for updates and shows I have never updated.

If you did option 3 correctly, then it would have reset your update history.

Did you look up error 0x80070490?

If you can't get that to work, try the Windows Repair AIO tool:
    http://www.tweaking.com/content/page...ll_in_one.html
You can just use the portable version (no installation).

Right-click on Repair_Windows.exe and click "Run As Administrator"

Do a "Power Reset" as described in Step 1, and then run Repair_Windows.exe again
    Click Right Arrow button

Step 2 is optional (System should already be clear of infections. If not, run AV and Malwarebytes scans)
    Click Right Arrow button

Step 3 is optional (Runs Check Disk)
    Click Right Arrow button

Step 4 is optional (Runs SFC)
    Click Right Arrow button

Click "Backup" under Registry Backup (Wait for process to finish)
Click "Create" under System Restore (Wait for process to finish)
    Click Right Arrow button

    Click Open Repairs

Leave all checkmarks as they are.
** For Windows 8/10 users, Reset Registry Permissions is NOT checked by design.

    Click Start Repairs
** The repairs may take a long time, so please be patient (33 steps)

When prompted, click Yes to restart

If the above still fails, you may be suffering what many Windows 7 and some 8.1 users suffered from earlier this fall/summer. That being a serious Windows update speed issue. Some users of Windows 7 and 8.1 tried to update their machines for hours and even days with no success!

The fix proved to be long in coming but does seem to now be available. This link deals specifically with the update speed issue.
http://wu.krelay.de/en/ In my own case, I never went through the "Steps to take after Windows installation" stuff you see on that page. I just downloaded the appropriate files for the system I needed and installed them as follows.

    1) Disable Automatic Updates. Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update > Change settings > "Never check for updates". Reboot the system (in case the "Windows Update" services is currently checking for updates).

    2) I installed the "Servicing Stack Update" version for the machine I was working. Some PCs already had this update installed. In either case, reboot before the next step to make sure things are nice and clear for step 3.

    3) Third, I installed the correct "Rollup" version for the machine. No machine I have worked on that had the slow update issue had this update previously installed. Reboot to finish up.

    4) Try running the Windows Update manually. If you have the same luck as I have, Windows Update will now finish within 5 to 10 minutes. If you have any updates, go ahead and do them. Once they are complete and you have rebooted, re-enable the automatic Windows Updates by doing step 1 again but this time choosing Install Updates Automatically.

This has worked for me 100% of the times I've tried it. Hopefully it will help you too. (Thanks to Dalai at http://wu.krelay.de/en/ )
