IE8 Opens And Closes Immediately (Win XP)

Old computer running Windows XP SP3 fully up to date with Windows Update

This morning when I tried to open IE8, it started and then immediately closed down.

I tried to open it a number of times with the same result.

    It was working OK yesterday.

If I start the computer in Safe Mode with Networking, IE8 opens OK.

As far as I know nothing has changed from yesterday.

I also have Google Chrome installed and that works OK.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Just so you know, IE8 is the reason I use Firefox.

You could also try a System Restore back to yesterday (when it was working)

BTW Google dropped support for Chrome on XP, so it will become more and more insecure.

Hi Train, reset IE 8 as you suggested, unfortunately it made no difference.

Hi MidKnyte, did a System Restore back to when it was working properly and unfortunately this also made no difference.

Did you try starting IE without addons? Right-click on the IE desktop icon and click "Start Without Add-ons"

Did you check Event Viewer for errors?

Are you running any AV or Firewall apps?

If the system is old, you may also want to run a HD diagnostic. I've run into situations where apps won't open due to HD problems, even if it boots into Windows.

I have encountered an XP SP3 system with the exact same symptoms. Even a reinstall of IE8 did not fix the issue.

It may be due to a corrupt user profile. You could see if it happens for all users of that computer. If you have only one set up, try creating a new one, then test IE8 while logged in as the newly created user.

    Hi MidKnyte,

Starting IE without addons - made no difference.
Checked Event Viewer - no errors reported.
Running Norton Internet Security 2012 (because of the age of the pc, Norton advised not to run a later version of NIS).
How do I run a HD diagnostic?

    Hi jdc2000,

Created a new user, then tested IE8 while logged in as the newly created user - made no difference.

As I stated in my original post, if I start the computer in Safe Mode with Networking, IE8 opens OK.

Please read the UBCD guide (link in my signature) or go to your hard drive manufacturer's support site. You didn't post the make of your HD.

Did you try disabling NIS2012 and see if IE8 works?

Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling IE8?

Of course, I need to mention that IE8 shouldn't be your main browser anymore. It hasn't been patched in 2 years.

    MidKnyte,

    Disabling NIS2012- made no difference.

    This may be of interest:-
Uninstalled NIS2012 and IE8 opens OK.
Reinstalled NIS2012 and problem returns, IE8 starts and then immediately closed down.

My HD is a Hitachi HDS721616PLAT80 - Have asked Hitachi for a HD diagnostic test.

I could uninstall IE8 via Add or Remove Programs but I don't know how then to reinstall IE8.

I think we have located the problem. Norton appears to be blocking IE8 from running. This is understandable, since IE8 is not longer supported, however, IE11 is not available for XP.

To fix this you may be able to configure Norton to allow IE8 to run. The links below may have some helpful instructions:

    http://smallbusiness.chron.com/norto...ork-79032.html

    http://www.symantec.com/connect/foru...nternet-access

If that does not work, you may have to turn off the Norton Firewall temporarily. This would not be recommended if you do not have your computer connected to a router with NAT however.

I will try this on the problem system I have access to later to see what works.

Try jdc2000's links first. Like I said, IE (and the rest of XP) hasn't been patched in over 2 years, so it's already insecure.

Western Digital now owns HGST (Hitachi storage), so you could try the WD diags. If that doesn't work, you can run Seatools on the Hitachi drive. At this point, it looks like NIS is the culprit, though.

I could uninstall IE8 via Add or Remove Programs but I don't know how then to reinstall IE8.

I have just found this link concerning this issue being discussed in Norton Community Forum which confirms it is a Norton problem.

    https://community.norton.com/en/foru...xp-sp3-nis2012

I will wait to see if they come up with a solution.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions.
