hard drive failure

I think my hard drive just died. When I try to boot up the drive, I receive "disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter" message. This is always one of my worse nightmares. I did a backup on this drive some time ago using acronis 2009 or 2013. How do I restore this backup on another drive? I appreciate the help in advance.

You should be able to boot from the Acronis disc. With a new drive installed and the backup drive connected, booting from the Acronis disc should allow you to restore the backup you made previously.

Hi jdc2000. I never restored a backup before. I had another drive on this computer that I was using as a backup drive. I can connect this drive as a main drive and boot into my flash drive containing acronis boot media and restore my backup on this backup drive that I set as the main drive? I assume my backup is stored on this flash drive.

The brand of this backup drive is a Seagate. I suppose I have to change the jumper on this drive to configure it as a main (boot up drive). Do you know where the jumper should be?

I can't remember which medium and where I saved my backup. I connected an external drive and booted into acronis with my flash drive and it doesn't show any backups listed when I choose recovery.

Acronis backup files usually have a .tib extension. See if you can locate those.

I just had a Seagate drive die on me last week, so I know your pain. Luckily, I had backups.

If it's a SATA drive, you wouldn't change any jumpers. If anything, you would just need to switch the SATA cable to the port where the main drive used to be.

Please confirm which version of TI you are using.

Did you have your computer case open for any reason and maybe unplugged the hard drive?

Were you recently in the BIOS and maybe changed some settings that would cause the pc to not read from the drive?

JLS, basing on the above, I would take the suspected defected drive out. Use an encloser or a data adapter and see if this drive will be recognize with another computer.

I am using a tablet without a keyboard which I dislike using so my replies may not be very detailed. I found my backup file that is on my external drive. I have a few old ide hhd drives that I have used in the past with OS and data on them. I am going to restore my backup on one of my old drives as a temporary solution to get back up and running. I am not sure which old drive I will use but I may use a Seagate barracuda 160GB ide hhd. Which slot do I insert the jumper to set as main boot drive?

I never restored a backup before, but I assume it is not difficult? Is there anything I may need to know before I attempt to restore my backup?

You're going to restore a SATA image to an IDE drive? That could work, but there is also a chance that you'll need to do a repair install after the restore.

Hi Midknyte. I am still using an IDE hhd because I'm still using win xp pro. I wanted to build a new computer but, have not had time. I do have a new Intel series 535 480GB SSD that I have not used yet. I suppose I would still have to do a repair install if I would restore a IDE image on a SATA drive?

I booted into acronis and it did not recognize my old IDE drive. I had the jumper on the 1st two pins (pins 7 & 8 according to the manual I believe). That must not be the correct pins for master drive. I think they were the same pins that I used when I used the drive as a slave but don't quote me. Should I try setting the jumper on different pins?

The jumper settings are listed on page 21 (actual page 29) of the document I posted a link to. The jumper farthest from the power connector is for Master / Single.

It depends on the motherboard chipset.

You should have said that in the beginning. So the old drive is IDE and you are replacing it with another IDE?

Do you have multiple drives on the IDE cable? Normally, I would set the drive to Cable Select for both drives. Otherwise, you need to set one to Master and the other to Slave.
