    Posible memory defect

    Possible

My primary computer has slowed down to a crawl, just in the past few days. It's always been short on memory, but the 2 GB was working fine for me before. I've already ruled out malware or any PUP that might be starting up. What program do you recommend to test my memory cards?

Memtest86+ on UBCD5. Go to the link in my signature. After you download it, post #3 is about Memtest86+

I would also recommend testing the hard drive and using something like SpeedFan to check the temps as well.

Got to this today. Downloaded memtest86-usb.zip, extracted it to a USB stick, restarted, set puter to boot from USB. I got the black screen, message says "Attempting to boot from USB," but it doesn't do anything.

I also D/L memtest86+-5.01usb.installer.zip, didn't use it. Was that the correct one?

I didn't understand everything in the Readme file. Was I supposed to start running it in Windows before the restart?

The USB drive has to be set up as bootable, you can't just copy files to it and expect it to boot. Did you follow the procedure in Midknyte's post #2 at the thread below?

Not yet. I was trying to follow the directions in the Readme.

    "Creating a bootable USB drive
    ========================================
    - Plug in your USB drive.
    - Launch the included ImageUSB application.
    - Select your USB drive from the list.
    - If it is not already selected, select the included image file in step 3.
    - Click 'Write to UFD'.

After accepting a few more prompts this should give you a working
    bootable USB drive."

OK, I have it. Ran the exe from my PC, not from the flash. I feel ignorant, but the last time I used memtest, we were still using floppies, a very long time ago

Can that flash drive be used for general emergency booting from now on, or only for booting with memtest?

You can set up flashdrives for general emergency booting.
Midknyte's guide , I set it up for Flashdrives
    http://discussions.virtualdr.com/sho...oot-CD-5-Guide

And I do on occasion, use items from this list ,
    http://livecdlist.com/

I also use the LinuxLive 2.6 distro for mem testing and salvage work.

    Thanks.

I followed the instructions that I cited in post #8, set the BIOS to boot from it, but it won't. Windows starts instead. Tried it twice.

I don't have a Linux distro, and I wouldn't know how to use it. Memtest used to be so easy.

Times like this I feeling like throwing the puter into the trash compactor. Which I did to another one about 10 years ago.

It sounds like the USB drive you have is not getting set up as bootable for some reason. If you have a CD/DVD drive, and a blank recordable disc (not RW), you can create a bootable disc and use that. It should work. Or you could try a different USB drive if you have one.

Is a regular CD recordable without using a writing program like Nero?
