My C drive fills up overnight!
I'm running Win 7 Home Pro, Gigabyte USB3 P55 mobo, 8 gigs DDR3 Ram, 5450 Graphics card
Last night when I shut down there were several windows Updates. Other than that, I don't know how my C drive's load went from about 250 gigs to 862 gigs, taking the drive into the red zone. I use Acronis TI, btw, but I had nothing scheduled. Did a defrag two days ago. This is not a desirable state. What should I do about it? System Restore? How do I locate the suddenly added data? I've never seen this before. It's a little scary, especially as I'm in the middle of e-pubbing a book.
Thanks

additional info
Looking through Windows folders on C drive for additions for 2/10 or 2/11. I find Win sxs with a load of files, amd-etc. And I find Assembly, which has a ton of MSIL files, etc., dated 2/11/16.

1. Run some scans for malware. 500 GB of files is not a good sign. It is way more than you should be getting even if Microsoft is helpfully downloading Windows 10 for you.
2. Stop Microsoft from attempting to download Windows 10. Use the article at the link below to opt out of the download, and also install GWX Control Panel.

There are a few apps you can use to check for large files:

Defrag doesn't clean up disk space. You can try something like CCleaner, JRT, and/or TFC.
I would use the portable version of CCleaner.

You can also clean up the old Windows Updates. That probably the Winsxs stuff.

Definitely check for the Win10 update like jdc2000 mentioned. Do you have Windows Update set to Automatic?

Yes, WU is on automatic, but not any more. I just tried Sys Restore and it didn't take. Error (damn, I forgot it!) something like Ox80070005. I'll try your recommended apps.
Thanks!

My Windows.Old is huge. and another Windows.old.ooo together account for 32 percent. I'm having trouble with your uploader. I can't delete the seven old files and it won't let me upload a new screen shot.

You should set Windows Update to Notify you of updates but NOT to download and install them automatically, especially on a computer you are trying to use for production work.

Ok, good. I would only install Critical Security updates. I don't install Optional updates unless they fix something specific to my computer.
System Restore does not clean up space either.
GWX Control Panel can get rid of the Windows 10 downloads.

Looks like we posted at the same time.
It sounds like you've ran repair installs before. Repair installs (in-place upgrades) would create the Windows.Old folders. The Win10 upgrade would also create it. If you don't plan on reverting back to the old installs, you can delete the folders.

What do you mean 'uploader'? Do you mean attachments?

Yes, I mean attachments. I'm too unsure of Acronis (the new one) to try it yet. That's my last resort before reformatting.

When I do Clean System Files of Disc Cleanup I don't see Previous Versions. I tried manually deleting the Windows.old but it wouldn't go.

I did find Previous Versions and can regain 70 gigs. but that's not going to solve the problem. What a mess! Should I uninstall WUdates one at a time?

How are you trying to clean up your forum attachments?
Please read the screenshot guide. I suspect that you might be trying to add large picture files.

Another way to check attachments:
Click on "Settings" at the top right of the forum page
Under My Settings - Miscellaneous, click Attachments
Check the files you want to delete and then click Delete Selected

Why isn't that going to solve the problem? Again, it sounds like you have multiple issues. 1) Windows.old folders from previous installs. 2) Windows 10 upgrade (GWX)
Did you run any of the cleaning tools also? That would take care of things like Temp files.

Did you install the Disk Cleanup Wizard addon to delete outdated Windows updates? (last link in post #4)
Here is an article that explains that:

Using Tree Size Free I show System Volume Information of 706gb. All the files are around 15.4 gb and they're all coded with long letter, numbers and dashes. I attempted to delete a long list of restore points with CC Cleaner but the program hung up. Nonetheless, I've cleaned out about 300 gigs from the C drive and am no longer in the red zone. What is this data? And where is it?
