ESET found no threats.
Computer is no longer freezing when I have more than 2 or 3 files and Chrome or FF open. The auto-hide taskbar is showing up as it should and DH is happy he doesn't have to wait 10 minutes for FF to open to get into email (that's what started this whole thing). The current Z@**** files have the .tmp extension (not .exe). However, when I restarted, the older files - from 6/25 & 27 - didn't get deleted, but the files from yesterday did...? I'll just check it again and see if it's getting cleared out or not. If not, I'll be checking over on Windows 7 as a performance issue. Not that I don't have my fair share of performance issues on this old clunker. (Pretty sure I'm getting a new computer here shortly!)
