Intel Solid State Drive
Is the Intel Series 730 solid state drive compatible with MAC system? The compatibility specs for this drive says intel compatible so I was wondering if this particular ssd was mac compatible? Are all ssd's mac compatible? Is the only requirement that you have a sata controller?

The reason why I am asking if I have a relative who bought an intel series 730 ssd for her mac and she is having trouble installing it. I don't know anything about mac systems.

I am not sure why it won't work for her. Is there a way that she can check to see if the drive is good or if it is a defective drive?

If anything, you would need to run the Intel Toolbox diags, but there is only a Windows version.
What did she do exactly? Did she clone the old drive to the new ssd?
It might help to know which version OSX she is running.
You might want to look up Mac forums also.

She has a MACbook pro 2012 and uses Yosemite OS. She cloned the new drive from the old drive using Superduper.

you should be able to hold down the option key and boot from the SSD. The first thing you’ll want to do is to go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and select your new SSD as your startup drive.
Did she check those settings?
Here's a how-to for SuperDuper. Maybe she missed a step.

Sorry, but this isn't a Mac-centric forum and I don't have a Mac. You'd probably have much better luck on a Mac forum.

Midknyte, when you said the mac forum, do you mean the Linux and unix forum? If so, can you just move this thread to that forum or should I post an entirely new thread in that forum?

I think Midknyte means the forums at apple.com or macrumors.com or other mac user community. The Mac forum here doesn't get much traffic.

jdc2000, oh ok. I appreciate the quick reply.
Since she uses a Macbook pro 2012 and Yosemite OS, I came across this website in the link below. My guess is maybe the intel ssd is not compatible with mac.
I will look into those mac forums you mentioned but I have one question? I read the compatibility for the Intel series 730 ssd and it said "compatibility - Intel". Do you know if that since it said Intel that it would not be compatible with a Macbook?

All the info I have seen indicates that the Intel 730 series SSD should be compatible with that Mac. The challenge is getting the existing drive cloned and and TRIM services or updates needed installed and working.

Yes, what jdc2000 said.
There is a firmware updater for Mac for the 730, so it should be compatible. My guess is that she didn't clone the drive properly or she didn't set the boot settings.

More info about Yosemite and kext signing:

Your relative could disable kext signing, but that's a security risk. I'm not sure how big of a deal it is, though.
