    HP 15.6" 15-r011dx Laptop

I have a friend who just purchased the HP 15-r011dx laptop. The details of it are in the link below. He didn't open it yet but after I did some research, I heard that some had received a virus as soon as they opened it up and booted up. I read a few situations like this and it was always from a HP laptop. He is not sure if he wants to keep it since hearing this. Has anyone ever heard of this before? How does a brand new system receive a virus right after booting up? I would like to know if this laptop is good or not, also.

It's highly unlikely it would get a virus just from booting up. If you connect to the Internet before you install AV, then it's possible. If it was a big problem, don't you think the media would be all over it?

I guess it's ok for the price. It's a budget laptop for sure.

NP. You gotta take those user reviews with a grain of salt.

With that said, Win8.1 comes with Windows Defender, but you should have your friend to install Malwarebytes as well. If you don't like WinDefender, then Avast is a free AV alternative.

It could also depend on what you'd call a virus. Some might call the bloatware that comes pre-installed in some computers malware. Your friend will probably want to get rid of some of the unnecessary proprietary and third party stuff that HP has placed there to get better performance.

Also, if the reviewer that claims to have had a virus right off the bat had bought a reconditioned laptop then it's not beyond the realm of possibility, although still pretty remote, that there was some sort of more sophisticated rootkit lingering from when the original user had it. I bought one of my tablets reconditioned to -allegedly- factory specs but I found two strange little Chinese third party translation programs installed that weren't supposed to be there. Fortunately they were just benign and easily gotten rid of but it could have been worse.
