Greetings from Montana
Dell Vostro 1500
Windows XP
Just finished up with Broni's malware program in the ICU....
But I seem to have an issue that started at the conclusion of Malware exercise...
My computer takes right at 20 minutes to boot... During that 20 minute period I can't seem to invoke progams like my Browser or Email. I use Incredimail for all of my email accounts...
I have the bare bones on start up... There is nothing under "Start Up" in Programs...
And I have nothing checked in the Start Up under msconfig....
As I said, I have just finished up with the Malware treatment.
I have gone through Disk Cleanup and defrag this past week...
ANyone have a thought?

Look in scheduled task for junk that does not need to start.

Look in Event Viewer and see if there are any errors.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427
Copy and paste the event id, source, and description and post back here. If there are multiple occurences of the same error, just post the error once.

How long does it take to boot into Safe Mode?

Let me preface this with:
I use the Hard Drive Indicator as my reference point... While the light is on, I am assuming that the HD is working... With that in mind, it is not until the light goes out and stays out that I can go into other programs quickly and uninterrupted.. The timeframe for this to occur is 22 min.
1. Removed everything from the Scheduled Task folder... No Change. Still 22 Min.
2. Safe Mode.... 2 min.
3. Under Event Viewer:
Application:

Since Safe Mode boots in normal time, then there is a problem with a driver or software. Using MSConfig, hide all Microsoft services, then uncheck all the remaining services. If the system boots in two minutes, begin enabling the services a few at a time until you find the culprit.
I would say to do the same with the startup programs, but you said none are checked.
The only barrier to knowledge is the perception that you already have it.

TropicalBound:
As sugggested: Checked the "Hide MS Services" and unchecked "The Rest"...
1. Couldn't "Hide" services. Said I needed to log on as an "Administrator". Never knew how to do that outside of "Safe Mode".
2. In any case "The Rest" have remained unchecked and start-up is down to 4 min... So I suspect therein could lie the prob.
But on a side note, can you tell me how to log in as an administrator when not in "Safe Mode"?
In the mean time I'll play with "The Rest"..

The first account that was created would be an administrative account. You can navigate to Control Panel / User Accounts to see a list. Sometimes its called 'Administrator', other times 'Owner'. However, an administrative account can have any name, depending on the user who first set the PC up.

Okay... One account... Chuck Lewis/Administrator
So when I boot my computer and it's up and running am I not already logged in under Chuck Lewis/Administrator?
Or do I need to actually officially log in somehow?

The HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service service hung on starting.
You can disable that service. Go into Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services. Stop the HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service and then set it to Disabled.
See if that helps your startup time.

If that is the only account, then yes, you are currently logged on as Chuck Lewis.
If you're still being prompted for credentials, even though you're logged on with administrative privileges, then User Access Control (UAC) may be the culprit. You can turn off UAC in Control Panel / User accounts.
